DUI

Just after 1 a.m. on Aug. 8, Officer Derek J. Hagopian responded to the area of the Grid Iron Ale House at 1599 Post Road for a reported hit-and-run accident. The reporting party advised dispatch that his vehicle had been struck by a dark colored Jeep, which left the scene and was observed entering Route 37 westbound.

The registration of the suspect vehicle was linked to an East Providence address, and Hagopian traveled onto I-95 north in an effort to locate it. He located a vehicle matching the description – and with heavy front-end damage – moving slowly in the breakdown lane.

Hagopian initiated a motor vehicle stop and made contact with the operator. He detected a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the operator’s breath, and observed her to have slurred speech and “mildly bloodshot” eyes.

The operator is said to have acknowledged consuming alcohol that evening. She is also said to have agreed to undergo field sobriety testing, which she reportedly failed.

Ashley E. Cole, 31, 75 Sweet Briar Ave., East Providence, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, Cole is said to have refused a chemical breath test.

Cole was later released into the custody of a sober adult and issued a summons to appear in Third Division District Court on charges of driving under the influence and duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle. She was additionally cited for refusal to submit to a chemical test and vehicles entering from a private drive.

LARCENY

Just before 11 a.m. on Aug. 7, Officer Nicholas J. DiNardo responded to the parking lot for the Old Navy location at the Warwick Mall for a report of a larceny.

At the scene, the reporting party told DiNardo that multiple items had been stolen from his white 2015 Ford F-250 sometime between roughly 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. that day. The items included tools and batteries with a combined value of approximately $2,000.

No security camera footage was available, and no suspects were immediately identified.

At approximately 8:37 a.m. on Aug. 9, Sgt. Joshua P. Myer met with a subject in the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters regarding a larceny incident.

The reporting party told Myer he had been shopping at the Target location at Warwick Mall the previous day when two items were stolen from his vehicle – a Ridgid ProPress kit valued at $2,000 and a Milwaukee Tool cordless saw valued at $450. The reporting party said one of the doors to his vehicle had been left unlocked, and he believed the theft occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Security camera footage was not available for the area of the parking lot in question.

VANDALISM

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Aug. 8, Officer Zachary J. Black responded to the Hilton Garden Inn on Thurber Street for a report of damage to a vehicle.

At the scene, the reporting party told Black that his vehicle, a red 2014 Volkswagen GLI, had been parked on Thurber Street at approximately 6:45 a.m. that day. When said when he returned to the vehicle at approximately 6 p.m., he found that his vehicle and a nearby pickup truck had been spray-painted.

Black observed spray paint along the vehicle’s driver’s side windows. The matter was documented. Security camera footage was not immediately available.

SHOPLIFTING

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, Officer Stephanie R. Pabis responded to the JCPenney location at Warwick Mall for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that a female suspect in the incident had left the scene in a silver Mazda, which was subsequently located by another officer in the parking lot of the nearby Concentra medical building.

At the scene, a loss prevention associate from the store provided Pabis with security camera footage showing the suspect. The associate said the suspect had selected multiple shirts and pants, concealed the items while inside a fitting room, and then exited the store without making any attempt to pay. The value of the merchandise was listed as $214.

Officers subsequently located the suspect within the Concentra building, and she was identified by loss prevention personnel.

Briana L. Dwyer, 25, 51 Hebert Ave., Apt. 3, Woonsocket, was arrested on a charge of shoplifting and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. She was later released with a summons to appear in Third Division District Court.

At 12:16 p.m. on Aug. 7, Officer Jeffrey B. Taranto responded to the Stop & Shop located at 2470 Warwick Ave. for a report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that a female suspect was in custody at the location.

Upon arrival, Taranto spoke with a loss prevention associate at the store. The associate said the suspect had been observed selecting and concealing roughly $32 worth of makeup and greeting cards before exiting the store without making any attempt to pay. At that point, the suspect was met by the loss prevention associate and escorted back inside the story, where the merchandise was recovered.

Laura A. Aptt, 41, 129 Metropolitan Drive, Warwick, was arrested on charges of shoplifting and shoplifting as a habitual offender. She was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, Officer Gregory C. Accinno responded to the JCPenney location at Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting incident in progress.

Upon Accinno’s arrival, two other officers had taken the shoplifting suspect into custody. A loss prevention associate at the store told police that the suspect had selected 32 clothing items with a combined value of $1,352, concealed them while inside a fitting room and then exited the store without making any attempt to pay. The suspect was met outside the store by loss prevention personnel, at which point police were contacted.

Diane Alice Niles, 55, 205 Sissions St., Pawtucket, was arrested on charges of shoplifting and shoplifting as a habitual offender. She was transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing and held pending an appearance in Third Division District Court.

WARRANT

Just after 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 7, Officer Gregory C. Accinno was conducting a patrol along the seawall on Oakland Beach Avenue when he observed an unoccupied, gray 2007 Honda Accord with its windows down.

A check of the vehicle’s registration found its owner was wanted on an active bench warrant issued from Superior Court. The owner was located on the beach during a check of the area.

Christopher S. Bergin, 48, 101 Cucumber Hill Road, Foster, was taken into custody on the warrant and transported to Warwick Police headquarters for processing. He was later taken to Sixth Division District Court.
