Warrington tabbed as CCRI softball coach

The CCRI Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of new a softball head coach. Kim Warrington has returned to CCRI to be named the new manager for the 2016-17 season. In addition, former Lady Knights standout Alex Place also returns to CCRI to assist Warrington.

Warrington returns to CCRI, where she was a volunteer assistant coach under then-Head Coach Bev Wiley in the 2005 season. Warrington has also served as an assistant coach at Roger Williams University in 2006 and 2007. Kim was also a junior varsity and varsity volunteer assistant at North Kingstown High School in 2008. Most recently she has the Head Girls’ Softball Coach at Exeter-West Greenwich High School from 2014-2016.

Warrington comes to CCRI with a wealth of talent as a player, coach and pitching instructor throughout the state of Rhode Island. She played at Rhode Island College (RIC), where she made All-Little East Conference every year she played and still holds many pitching records including most career strikeouts with 629 and innings pitched with 632. In addition, Warrington is ranked No.2 on the RIC all-time pitching list with 17 career shutouts and No. 3 all-time with a 1.59 ERA, which helps explain why she is such a sought-after pitching instructor.  However, she could also hit, as evidenced by the fact that she is also ranked No. 2 on the RIC hitting list for doubles in a season with 15 (2001). For her athletic efforts, Warrington was recognized as the Distinguished Female Athlete from RIC by the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) in 2004. Her comprehensive knowledge of the game of softball coupled with her abilities as an educator make her a perfect fit for the talented Lady Knights’ squad that returns the likes of single-season strikeout leader Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, Rhode Island) and fellow All-Region XXI teammates Madison Cooper (Pawtucket, Rhode Island), who batted .500 last year, and Bella Malvinni (Westerly, Rhode Island), who batted .325 while playing flawlessly at shortstop.  Kim currently works as a special educator at Portsmouth High School and resides in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Joining Warrington as assistant coach will be CCRI alumna Alex Place, who returns to CCRI after completing her studies this December. She received a Bachelor of Science in Sports Entertainment/Event Management from Johnson & Wales University, where she also was the goaltender for the Wildcats women’s soccer team.

Alex is a natural leader who excels at everything she does because she attacks it with passion and enthusiasm while being very talented. Place was a two-year captain on both the Lady Knights women’s soccer and softball teams while attending CCRI. As a sophomore, Place earned All-Region XXI honors while batting .397 with 29 hits, including six doubles and two triples, 12 RBIs and 15 runs scored while leading CCRI in stolen bases with 16. During her freshman campaign, Alex batted .330 with 32 hits, including five doubles with 11 RBIs and 18 runs scored while leading the Lady Knights with 21 stolen bases. For her career, Place ranks third on the CCRI career stolen base list, tied with Jasmine McCone (2010-11) with 37 career stolen bases. Place was also recognized by RIAIAW as the Distinguished Female Athlete from CCRI in 2014 for her efforts both on and off the soccer and softball fields. Alex is a Staffing and Event Coordinator at Tom’s Market in Coventry while residing in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
