Warwick resident helps create special cake for sick boy's birthday
As hundreds of emergency responders and military personnel from throughout New England and across the country turned out for Tyler Seddon’s birthday celebration on March 6, Warwick resident Brittni Rea played a key role in creating a particularly special piece of the festivities.
Brittni works at Amy’s Apples in Smithfield, and along with owner Amy Heaton and Mikayla Kelsall created a cake for Tyler at the request of his aunt.
“[The family has] done some things with us in the past, and she realty wanted this amazing, awesome birthday cake for him,” Brittni said. “She just told us kind of what he was interested in.”
Tyler is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for the second time, and had requested cards from his heroes – police officers, firefighters, EMTs and military members – for his 7th birthday. When his mother, volunteer Pascoag firefighter Rachel Seddon-Dunn, sought out cards using social media, the request went viral.
The response – and the scope of the birthday celebration – grew exponentially, and Tyler was greeted by a caravan of his heroes and received a special welcome at the Burrillville Police Department before his party at Wright’s Farm Restaurant.
The cake created at Amy’s Apples incorporated the police, fire and military themes. It featured a ladder, firefighter boots, dog tags with the message “Happy Birthday Tyler” and a police officer’s hat on top, as well as flames being doused by a fire hose.
“That cake was just for him,” said Brittni.
Brittni said she and Amy delivered the cake to Wright’s Farm early Thursday morning. At that point, a massive crowd had already started to gather.
“It was crazy,” she said.
The two did not get to see Tyler – “He was everywhere yesterday,” Brittni said – but did see his aunt.
“They were all really happy with the cake,” she said.
