Lady Titans fall 2-1 in Woonsocket

The Warwick co-op Lady Titans ice hockey team was overpowered 2-1 by the Mount St. Charles/Cumberland/Lincoln School co-op on Friday night at Adelard Arena in Woonsocket.

Warwick head coach David Tibbetts felt his squad left it all on the ice in the third period as the girls wrapped up a busy week.

“We had a game on the road last night against Barrington and Portsmouth Abbey,” Tibbetts said. “So, that was a late night on a school night, and tonight coming all the way up to Mount; I thought they came out in the third period. They were determined to try to get the game back in hand and we almost tied it up, but they had a good effort.”

Mount struck first at 6:42 of the second period when senior captain Katielynn Mastroianni put a backhand on net and fellow senior Leah Gallagher punched it in and gave Mount a 1-0 lead.

Three and a half minutes later, Mount expanded its leverage when freshman Sara DeSousa assisted to Macee Salley, a junior, and she rifled it past Rebecca Yaseen, the Lady Titans goaltender, and made it 2-0.

Warwick came out more aggressive in the third frame and lit the lamp when newly acquired senior Kaylee O’Connor soared a towering shot over the goaltender, Ameilia Lambert, and into the back of the net for an unassisted tally while pulling the Lady Titans within a score at 2-1.

O’Connor moved to Warwick this season after residing in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

“It’s been a big change, but they’ve really welcomed me to the team,” O’Connor said. “I feel really confident playing with them. It’s awesome, honestly. It’s been an adventure with them.”

Tibbetts is happy to have acquired such a gifted athlete.

“She can play offense and defense,” Tibbetts explained. “She’s been a big help. It was kind of a surprise, obviously, having her show up. But, Meaghan McCamish is out for the season, so that’s a big loss. She’s one of our better players, so Kaylee kind of helps fill that role a little bit.”

McCamish was hurt while playing field hockey earlier this year.

Senior star forward and captain Nicole Procaccini also feels O’Connor is a significant boost for the club.

“She’s a great addition,” Procaccini concluded. “She’s definitely a great player. So we’re excited to see what we can do this season with her.”

In the end, the Lady Titans would come up one goal shy after Lambert denied Warwick’s last two tries from Procaccini and O’Connor.

Procaccini said she wasn’t going to go out without a fight and the sniper could be seen firing several shots on net during the final minutes of the contest.

“She played her heart out,” Tibbetts said. “She’s our captain. So, she definitely was a leader tonight and she’s a senior and she’s doing whatever she can to help the team.”

It was the first time that O’Connor saw Mount and the senior believes she and her teammates gave the highly touted opposition all they could handle.

“They were a big competition, but I think we really stood in there with them and I’m proud of us for doing that,” O’Connor said.

Yaseen stopped 38 shots for Warwick and Lambert denied 26 for Mount.

Warwick falls to 0-3 on the season and plays next at home on Friday evening at 6 p.m. against La Salle.
