Warwick Continental cruises to 9-0 win over NK/Wickford

The Warwick Continental American District All-Stars blanked North Kingstown/Wickford 9-0 in the winners bracket of the 10-year-old’s District Baseball 2018 double-elimination tournament on Monday evening at Louis M. D’Abrosca field in Warwick.

Warwick was led by starting pitcher and ace Mason Broomfield, who had seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

“The kids have been rolling and just been playing baseball,” Warwick manager Jamie Luisi said. “This is our third victory. The first game we won 21-7, the second 11-0, and now 9-0. So, the kids have been playing well.”

Those are the actual scores, but because the scores are cut to ten as a result of the 10-run rule, the official scores, which are listed on the bracket, score those games as 17-7, 10-0, and 9-0.

Luisi chalks the latest win up to good pitching and defense.

“Solid pitching,” Luisi said. “The kids made the plays. We put the ball in play just enough, got some runs across the board, and came out with the victory. Can’t say much more than that.”

Warwick utilizes two catchers, Corbin Anderson, who started the game, and Michael Blair, who finished it, and Luisi was pleased with the way that the two of them performed.

“We’ve got two catchers because it’s a tough job back there,” Luisi said. “It’s good to have a couple good catchers. Anderson’s been solid for us and Blair has played really well too.”

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, Warwick’s Charlie Brown worked a bases-loaded walk and gave his team a 1-0 advantage. Then with the bases still jammed, Ethan Luisi hit a two-run single and scored both Joey Riviera and Tiernan Leahy and extended the Warwick edge to 3-0. Broomfield blasted a double to left-center and scored Brown from second while upping the Warwick lead to 4-0.

Then in the bottom of the third, Warwick scored the rest of its runs.

Blair and Brown earned back-to-back walks with the bases-loaded which brought home two runs and ballooned the Warwick lead to 6-0. Leahy then scored from third after an error at first base and made it 7-0. Finally, with runners at second and third, Broomfield rocketed a shot to center over the glove of a backpedaling Jacob Hamilton in centerfield and drove in both Brown and Blair while increasing the Warwick margin to 9-0.

Warwick plays in the championship game on Saturday, July 7 at 1pm at D’Abrosca field against the winner of Coventry and NK/Wickford, who face off in the losers’ bracket final on Thursday at 7:30 pm at Wilson Park in Wickford.

Beacause Warwick is undefeated in the three games that it’s played, the winner of that game would have to beat Warwick twice to catch the crown. The second game would be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. if necessary.

Luisi, the manager, heads into the championship game on Saturday full of confidence in his team.

“I feel very confident in these boys, the way that they’ve been playing,” Luisi said. “I have a great, talented, group of kids, and they come out here and put it all on the field and have gotten the job done every time we’ve been out here. So, my confidence has got to be a little high, but its baseball and that’s why we play the game.”

There is little doubt that Broomfield will get the ball to start the championship game on Saturday.

“He needs four days’ rest, but we don’t play until five days, so I think I have to go with Mason, because if I don’t, a lot of people will be mad at me,” Luisi said with a chuckle. “So, Mason will probably be our starter, but we’ll see. We do have really good pitching after Mason too, that we didn’t utilize today, but we didn’t need to.”
