DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On November 17 at approximately 3:36 p.m., Officer Derek Mourato was dispatched to the area of Bald Hill Road and East Avenue for a report of a possible intoxicated driver who a caller stated “was all over the roadway.”

Upon arrival to the area, the officer located the suspect vehicle traveling south on Bald Hill Road in the area of Toll Gate Road. Behind the suspect vehicle was the reporting party as well. The officer followed the vehicle in question and observed it swerving in and out of the lane of travel, swerving over the fog line and traveling in the breakdown lane. A traffic stop was then initiated in the area of Universal Boulevard.

Contact was then made with the driver, identified as Susan Murphy, 59, of 154 Armington Street in Cranston. While speaking with Murphy, the officer noticed that her speech was slurred and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. According to the report, Murphy stated that she was coming from work and that she had “two drinks with vodka” that evening. Officer Mourato reported that there was a half empty bottle of Karkov Vodka inside Murphy’s purse. Additional officers were then requested at the scene for assistance, and Murphy then exited her vehicle and consented to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests.

Based upon the officer’s training and experience, it was determined that Murphy was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely, and she was taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence. Her car was towed from the scene, and Murphy was transported to police headquarters. A witness to the erratic driving completed a witness statement indicating that Murphy nearly struck multiple vehicles and was swerving throughout the roadway. At the station, Murphy later refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test.

Murphy was processed and booked, and charged with driving under the influence first offence, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and laned roadway violations. She was later released to the custody of a sober adult.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to Wal-Mart on November 18 at 11:55 a.m. for a shoplifter in custody. At the store he met with a member of Loss Prevention who stated that she observed a woman, later identified as Katie Collins, 31, of 12A Thompson Avenue in Westerly, walking and looking around suspiciously. She then headed to the electronics department where she selected DVDs, which were then concealed in her purse. She then made her way past all points of sale without paying for the merchandise.

Outside the store she was approached by security and escorted back inside, where $324.64 worth of products was recovered. Murray was transported to police headquarters where she was charged with one count of felony shoplifting due to a prior conviction, along with habitual offender shoplifting as she had three prior convictions. Collins also had an outstanding hold without bail warrant for failure to appear on a suspended license charge out of Wakefield. She was later transported to the ACI.

STOLEN SNEAKERS

On November 18 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Officers Julio Benros and Charles Austin were dispatched to Warwick Mall for a report of a shoplifting in progress from Footlocker. While en route, dispatch advised that the subject was a black male wearing a black sweatshirt who was fleeing across Bald Hill Road towards West Marine. As Officer Austin approached the mall, he observed a black male crossing Bald Hill Road holding a Footlocker Bag and wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

The officer stopped to speak with the man, who stated that he had gone to Footlocker and purchased the items and showed a receipt. Officer Austin asked the man if he had seen anyone traveling in the area with a Footlocker bag, and he stated no. A Warwick Mall officer then arrived on scene and confirmed that the man the officer was speaking with was not the suspect involved in the shoplifting.

Officers then responded to West Marine and found a male fitting the suspect’s description, who was carrying a pair of sneakers in a box. When asked what he was doing, the man stated that he was waiting for a friend. According to the report the man, later identified as Alexander Garcia, 19, of 218 Calla Street in Providence, then admitted to taking the shoes from Footlocker. A store manager later positively identified Garcia as the shoplifting suspect. The shoes, valued at $190, were recovered.

Garcia was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters where he was processed and charged with one count of misdemeanor shoplifting. He was later released with a court summons.

STOLEN WALLET

Around 4:19 p.m. on November 18, Officer Ryan Lancaster responded to the Bald Hill Road Wal-Mart for a stolen wallet report. At the scene he spoke with the reporting party, who stated that she had been in the aisle of the store where water is displayed, and that she placed her purse on a shelf while she walked to the other end of the aisle to pick up a case of water. She told the officer that she was away from her purse for five minutes, and when she returned she discovered her wallet was missing.

The contents of the wallet included $80 cash, a social security card, insurance cards and several credit cards. Store security reviewed videotape of surveillance footage, however, there were no camera angles that showed the area of the aisle where the purse had been left unattended. No suspects were identified, and the case was forwarded to detectives for review.

CVS SHOPLIFTING

On November 19 around 2:24 a.m., Officers Keri-Ann Leighton and David Waddington were dispatched to the CVS on Warwick Avenue for a larceny in progress. An employee of the store stated that the suspect came in just after 2 a.m. wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and a red hat with a black rim, approximately 5’ 7” in height with a goatee and facial hair. The employee stated that it looked like the man took over the counter drugs, pregnancy tests, and possibly body spray.

The man then passed all points of sale and left the store, setting off the alarm at the door. The suspect was followed outside by the employee, who saw the man enter a gray Toyota, but a license plate number was not obtained. The employee stated that the suspect backed up his car and told the employee “I have to buddy.” He then left on Post Road.

The man was captured on surveillance footage, and the store wished to press charges if the suspect is found.

LARCENY

Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to the Sheraton on November 22 around 7:53 a.m. for a larceny report. There he met with the reporting party, who stated that she had arrived at the hotel around midnight. As she was entering the room, she had to put her black Ralph Lauren bag on the hallway floor as she had to bring several bags into her room.

After storing her bags in her room, she returned three minutes later to pick up the Ralph Lauren bag only to find that it was missing. Contained inside was her passport, approximately $125 in cash, her car keys and medication. There was no video surveillance in the hallways to that hotel. Management told the office that they would view video from the lobby to see in anyone left with the purse. Currently there are no suspects or witnesses.
