FATAL CRASH

Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, stated in a press release that two people died and two others were injured after their vehicle went off the road and struck a tree on Route 4 North near the merge with Interstate 95 in Warwick at approximately 3:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

The victims were identified as Emma Brown, age 21, of 17 Bethany Road in Wakefield and Lorenzo Smith, age 33, of 576 Fort Road, South Kingstown.

They were passengers in the vehicle, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by troopers from the State Police Wickford Barracks and the Collision Reconstruction Unit.

SHOPLIFTING

On Jan. 16 at approximately 12:52 p.m., Officers Brian Murray and Rose Michel were dispatched to the Bald Hill Road Walmart for a report of a shoplifting in progress. The reporting party and an asset protection officer stated that there was a suspect in the store, described as a Hispanic male, wearing all black.

While en route to the scene the officers were advised that the suspect had left the store with concealed merchandise. Upon arrival, Officer Murray was met by the asset protection officer who was with the suspect, later identified as Giovanni Arroyo, 38, of 66 Seaside Drive in Jamestown.

The employee told the officer that they allegedly observed Arroyo enter the store and look around suspiciously. He then proceeded to the electronics department, where he selected two Playstation controllers. He later reportedly took the controllers out of their packaging and concealed them, then made his way outside. He was approached by security and escorted back inside where the controllers, valued at $119.92, were recovered.

Arroyo was placed into custody and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with felony shoplifting due to a prior conviction.

BREAKING AND ENTERING

Officers Damian Andrews and Melissa Pinheiro responded to 1690 West Shore Road on Jan. 15 at 3:45 a.m. for a report of an alarm at Twisted Pizza. The alarm indicated front entry of the restaurant, and dispatch advised that two minutes later a second alarm came in.

At the scene the officers checked the building, where they observed that the lower right glass panel of the front door had been kicked in. They also observed half of a sheet of glass inside of the building with a $10 bill on it. The officers entered the building and found it to be empty. They found that a cash register had been taken from the counter and dropped on the floor. The cash drawer money clips were open and there were several coins strewn about the store. There was no other damage to the building or property.

According to a restaurant employee, there was approximately $100 in various denominations in the cash register, which was missing. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrived and processed the scene for evidence, and department detectives were notified of the situation. The owner of the restaurant wishes to press charges if a suspect is found.

***

On Jan. 15 at approximately 7:33 a.m., Officers David Thompson and Gavin McVeigh were dispatched to Pioneer Pizza on Post Road for a possible break-in in progress. The officers were advised that the reporting party had arrived on scene to open the business and found that the glass in front of the store had been broken out.

When the officer arrived, they observed that the top window to the front door of the business was smashed out. There was a large concrete block on the ground near the front door, and the safety glass was inside the business. Officers secured the building and found no one inside.

While inside officers observed that the cash registers were skewed with their cash drawers missing. The employee stated that there was approximately $23 in coins in the cash registers and nothing else. A tip jar and a roll of coins on a counter were also untouched.

Detectives responded to the scene, and the case was turned over to them. There are currently no suspects.

VANDALISM/THEFT

While on patrol on Jan. 13 at approximately 3:57 p.m., Officer Walter Larson was dispatched to 5 Division Street to meet with East Greenwich Police in regard to a vandalism and larceny that had occurred.

Upon arrival he met with Officer David Delbonis who advised that the victim was in the parking lot just east of the 5 Division Street building. She stated that she had parked her car at 3:30 p.m. and left her blue wallet in the car. When she returned she found that her window had been smashed and that the wallet was gone. Inside the wallet were credit cards, which she had already called and cancelled.

There were no fingerprints in the vehicle to process and currently there are no suspects. The case was forwarded to detectives for review.

STOLEN GOODS

Officer Quentin Tavares was dispatched to the Kohl’s store on Bald Hill Road on Jan. 16 at approximately 3:32 p.m. for a shoplifting report.

At the store the officer met with a loss prevention specialist who explained that around 1:20 p.m. that day a woman entered the store with a brown purse. She was then observed allegedly taking pants, candles and a wallet and then entered a fitting room. She then left the room, which an employee checked, however no items were found there. The woman then exited the store with the items reportedly concealed on her person.

The woman, later identified as Tina Siakala, 43, of 114 Central Avenue in East Providence, was approached and escorted back into the store. There, a total of six items, valued at $117.45, were recovered.

Siakala was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters where she was booked and processed. She was charged with one count of felony shoplifting and issued a no trespass order for Kohl’s.
