DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On Jan. 26 at approximately 5:42 p.m., Officer Fontaine was at the intersection of Woguagonet and Oakland Beach Avenue when he observed a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling south on Oakland Beach Avenue at a high rate of speed. He then clocked the vehicle as traveling approximately 48 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.

The car was then observed attempting to take a right onto West Shore Road, and the operator did not stop at the intersection’s stop sign. A traffic stop was then initiated in the area of 2121 West Shore Road, and contact was made with the driver, identified as Edward Santos, 55, of 224 Vineyard Road Apt. 203 in Warwick.

While speaking with Santos, the officer reported that he observed a strong odor of alcohol, and that he exhibited signs of intoxication. Santos was asked to step from the vehicle, and told officers that he did not consume any alcoholic beverages that day. According to the police report, the reporting party saw Santos and his two passengers drinking beers behind the Warwick Public Library and littered the area with empty cans.

Santos was asked if he would agree to partake in a series of standardized sobriety tests, and allegedly stated, “I’m not doing a DUI test, I’m not doing it. I refuse everything, just arrest me.”

Santos was then placed into custody and placed in a police cruiser. His passengers were released at the scene while Santos was transported to police headquarters. He was charged with driving under the influence, second offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and multiple laned road violations.

The women then spoke with staff briefly and began to shop around the store. She selected ten pairs of capri pants, which she allegedly concealed in a bag, worth approximately $649.50, before exiting the store and escaping.
