Warwick Figure Skaters gear up for annual holiday show


The Warwick Figure Skaters will hold their annual holiday show on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at Thayer Arena. The show is once again a benefit for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, and admission is a canned good or other non-perishable foot item. The holiday season presents fantastic opportunities to give back to our friends and neighbors, and Warwick Figure Skaters joyfully embraces that spirit with this event.

Registration open for Amica Marathon

Registration is now open for the 2012 Amica Marathon. The announcement was made last week by Amica Insurance and Eident Sports Marketing. Slated for October 13-14, 2012, in scenic Newport, the weekend-long event will feature the Amica Marathon, UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and Amica 5k. Nearly 5,000 runners participated in this year’s event, which included the Amica Marathon, UnitedHealthcare Half Marathon and Amica 5k. Runners – ranging in age from 14 to 80 – came from as far away as Australia to compete in the event, which showcased the City by the Sea.

Charles Engle, 40, was the winner at the 2011 Amica Marathon. Engle of Coos Bay, Oregon, completed the scenic 26.2-mile course in 2:36:51 to earn his 124th marathon victory. Barrington’s Michael Meehan was the runner-up and top Rhode Island finisher. Meehan crossed the finish line in 2:51:40.

Rachel Sweet, 26, of Rochester, N.Y. was the top female. She recorded her first-ever marathon victory with a winning time of 3:05:44. She defeated 2010 Amica Marathon winner Michelle Gosselin, of Providence, who was the runner-up this year in 3:11:05.

Amica Insurance is the title sponsor of the Amica Marathon. Proceeds benefit the Providence Ronald McDonald House and the March of Dimes.

CCRI softball raising funds with holiday shopping program

For the fourth year in a row, the CCRI Lady Knights softball team is partnering with www.UnitedScrip.com to help you with your holiday shopping and to raise funds for their team expenses. You can choose gift cards from hundreds and hundreds of retailers, now with even more to choose from across the country from restaurants, retailers, entertainment, and home improvement stores, to hotels and travel.

The program raises money for the CCRI softball team, which went 20-13 last year and won its sixth straight region championship.
