Warwick girls battle, but fall to La Salle
The Warwick Co-op girls’ hockey team fell to the undefeated La Salle team by a score of 2-0 at the Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink on Friday night.
La Salle entered the game with a perfect record of 4-0, while the
Lady Titans came in with a record of 3-1 on the young season.
Both teams got off to relatively slow starts, as they combined for just six first-period shots. Warwick had two chances to open the scoring on the power play, but the Rams penalty killers took care of business and the period ended in a scoreless tie.
Midway through the second period, LaSalle finally broke through for the game’s first goal.
Freshman forward Meaghan Rickard scored her sixth goal of the season after taking a pass from fellow first-year Sarah Migliori and putting a shot over the glove of Warwick goalie Kayleen Murphy. The assist was Migliori’s fifth point in as many games this season.
Warwick had another power play chance in the second period, but failed to record a single shot, as La Salle’s shorthanded unit once again stood tall.
The Lady Titans had multiple chances in the final period to try to tie the game, including a fourth power play and more than one odd-man rush, but thanks to La Salle goaltender Holly Scott, all Warwick’s chances went by the wayside.
Scott has allowed just two goals in five games this year for the Rams.
In the opposing net, Murphy did her part to keep her team in the game, as she made 15 saves on 17 shots. She was, however, beaten a second time by a La Salle shot when senior assistant captain Jenna Pari took the puck from her own blue line and eventually found the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
Pari’s goal turned out to be the final scoring play, as Warwick’s offense was only able to muster eight total shots on net and did not convert on any of the four power play chances that they had.
With the loss, the Lady Titans fell to 3-2. Their next game will be against the Cranston co-op team on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Thayer Arena. Following that, they’ll square off with Cranston again on Sunday for a New Year’s Day game at Smithfield Municipal Rink at 2 p.m.
