Warwick ranked as 3rd safest city in the country

Warwick ranked as the third safest city in the United States by independent analyst company Wallethub, behind only South Burlington, VT and Nashua, NH, according to their “2017’s Safest Cities in America” report released on Monday, Dec. 4.

According to the study, Warwick has the second fewest violent assaults (per capita) in the country, only behind Irvine, Calif. For context, Providence ranked at number 61 and Boston ranked at 133. Nashua, NH came in at the safest city and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. was the least safe, out of 182 that were analyzed and ranked.

“I’m delighted to announce that the City of Warwick named as one of the safest cities in the country by WalletHub,” said Mayor Scott Avedisian in a release. “Yet another great achievement for the City of Warwick, which continues to remain the best and safest place to live, work and raise a family.”

To get the rankings, Wallethub broke down each city into three key dimensions – Home and Community Safety; Financial Safety; and Natural Disaster Risk. Those dimensions were graded using 35 different metrics pertaining to each category – such as the number of violent crimes and the number of police officers per resident in the community to help grade the Home and Community Safety dimension.

Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the highest level of safety. All metrics were then combined to get the total safety score for a community. Warwick’s third-ranking safety score amounted to 87.18.

Out of the 182 cities and towns graded, Warwick ranked second overall in Home and Community Safety, which Avedisian said was “no doubt a reflection of the dedicated men and women working for our Police Department that is proven to be the best department in the state and region.”

Warwick also ranked 17th overall in Natural Disaster Safety and 38th in Financial Security Rank. While some may certainly raise their eyebrows at the latter ranking, it makes more sense when understanding that the ranking used metrics pertaining to overall poverty rate, personal income, individualized savings and the median credit score of the community. In other words, the state’s unhealthy financial situation had no weight on the ranking for Warwick’s financial safety rating.

This is the second time Warwick has ranked highly on a large-scale study of America’s largest cities conducted by Wallethub. In July Warwick was ranked as the 22nd best run city and the #1 overall least violent city in the country as part of their 2017 “Best and Worst Run Cities” report.

“Kudos to everyone who made this ranking possible,” Avedisian said. “Your commitment to our city is highly appreciated.”

If we can just get people to hide their valuables and lock their car doors and the WPD continue to arrest the drunk drivers and shoplifters who come into Warwick from other communities, there'll be virtually NO crime.

I guess the self-serving abuses of the teachers' union, school committee and public servants are exempt.
