Warwick wrestlers compete at New England tourney
The state champion Bishop Hendricken wrestling team qualified a few wrestlers for the New England High School Championships this weekend at the Providence Career & Technical Academy, and finished the tournament with 13 points.
Warwick Vets also competed, as it qualified three wrestlers and scored a total of 19 points. Toll Gate had one wrestler in the tournament, and it scored three total points.
Hendricken was led by Jason Davol, who won two matches, lost in the quarterfinals and then won a consolation round match to pick up five points at 106. Anthony DiMauro scored four points at 145 after winning twice in the consolation rounds, and Chris Barone rounded out the Hawks’ scoring by grabbing four points thanks to a win in the consolation round.
Nick Celico, Rob Lanni, Hunter Boesch and Dallas Sauer all competed as well.
Vets’ three wrestlers were all state champions hoping for New England crowns. Though it didn’t end up that way, they still had solid showings. John Altieri led the way with a sixth-place finish at 113 after winning two matches, then losing in the semifinals. He then fell in the consolation semifinals and lost due to medical forfeit in the fifth-place match. He earned 10 points.
Nate Colicci won two consolation round matches to pick up four points at 126, while George Schmeider did the same thing at 160 to pick up four more points.
Toll Gate’s Aaron Travers qualified at 138 and won two consolation round matches before falling 3-2 in the consolation quarterfinals. (Warwick Beacon photos by Leo van Dijk / rhodyphoto.com)
