To Karen Bachus and the Warwick School Committee:
What I did not see in your description of actions to balance your budget was any reference to cutting administrative staff positions. Once again, you propose cutting those individuals who have direct contact with the students. If you feel that all of those administrators are essential and cannot be cut then I propose that you start thinking outside the box.
Let’s redefine the job description of administrators and staff and require all those who hold a valid Rhode Island teaching license to teach one class per day of serve as a substitute teacher. Think of what could be saved for maintenance, mentoring, sports, etc. There are ways to balance the budget without eliminating those positions of those who directly contact the students.
And, by the way, what is happening to all the excess property that the school system owns…empty school buildings, for instance.

And yet neither proposed solution will permanently fix the problem. It would be nice to hear about a long-term solution that will ensure we won't be facing the same problem this time next year.

Henry, no one wants the old school properties. If they were valuable, builders would have grabbed them.
The only long term solution is to pass legislation taking the control of the budget away from inept school committee members and putting it in the city council realm. The school spend too much and give away money to raises every year. It has to stop.
