According to a family member, yesterday afternoon Haylee, a 7-year-old student at John Wickes Elementary, underwent surgery to attempt to repair her leg, which was injured last Wednesday, May 9 around 7 p.m. when an SUV crossed the intersection of Greenwich Avenue and King Street, struck her and then flew through a fence into Pontiac Park.

Anthony Sudduth, 47, who lives nearby at 142 King St. and reportedly was on his way to work was identified by police as the driver. According to a witness who asked to remain unidentified, the girl who had been riding a scooter and was with her three siblings was thrown into the air by the impact. The witness said the driver was restrained from leaving the scene by someone in the park while a neighbor and off-duty Warwick firefighter attended to Haylee.

According to a family member of the victim, whose mother is Amanda and stepfather is Cesar Reyes, Haylee has been in the hospital since the accident and underwent surgery to attempt to repair her left leg on Monday afternoon. 

The family member said that there has been a GoFundMe page set up for Haylee, which can be found online at gofundme.com/lets-help-haylee, and that Wickes is starting to coordinate fundraisers for her. 

Mothers Against Drunk Driving had also already planned for a 3K walk fundraiser on June 2, the family member said, which will now be used to raise money for Haylee and her family.

Haylee has three siblings, including a twin sister, who were there at the scene of the accident.

The GoFundMe had reached $6,869 of its $25,000 goal as of press time Monday.

Col. Stephen McCartney said Monday the department is waiting for the toxicology report. He was charged with one count of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury. On Thursday Judge Mary McCaffrey set the maximum bail of $5,000 with surety, ordering that Sudduth be evaluated for drug and alcohol abuse. He is banned from driving until the evaluation is complete.
