Wilbury Theatre Group moves into old Trinity space, presents off-Broadway hit "Body Awareness"
The Wilbury Theatre Group continues their groundbreaking 2012/2013 Season with Annie Baker's off-Broadway hit Body Awareness, directed by Wendy Overly, to be presented March 21-April 6 in a new performance space adjacent to Trinity Church at 393 Broad Street, home of the Southside Cultural Center and birthplace of Providence's leading theater, Trinity Repertory Company.
Hailed by Time Out New York as "A marvelously deft and humane comedy," Body Awareness offers a glimpse into the quirky domestic life of a contemporary yet unpredictable family during one transformative week. Helmed by Overly (longtime supporter of The Wilbury Group and resident artist at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre), the artistic and production team of Body Awareness exemplifies a blend of some of the region's most established talent and promising up and comers, featuring Gamm resident actor Karen Carpenter in her first performance with The Wilbury Group, Clare Blackmer (recently seen as The Narrator in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at The Wilbury Group), Kerry Callery (Destefano on the Air! at The Wilbury Group, Festen at Gamm Theatre), and newcomer Sam Appleman in his Wilbury Group debut.
"In the short span of a few years, Annie Baker has firmly established herself as one of the most promising and provoking new voices in American theatre today," says Wilbury Group Artistic Director Josh Short. "To be able to share one of her most intimate and powerful works as part of our first full season, and to be able to do it in the same space where the founding artists of Trinity Repertory Company first cut their teeth with a director, cast and crew this accomplished, marks an incredibly important step forward for us."
Body Awareness begins previews on Thursday, March 21; opens on Monday, March 25, 2013; and closes on Saturday, April 6, 2013. Critics and members of the press are invited to attend Press Night on Monday, March 25 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online at www.thewilburygroup.org/buy-tickets.
Body Awareness by Annie Baker
Welcome to Shirley State College, Vermont where it's Body Awareness Week. In charge of the week's festivities, college professor Phyllis has anything but a conventional life with girlfriend Joyce and her son Jared. But when Frank Bonitatibus, a visiting artist, brings his photographs of nude women into their home, conflicting feelings over sexuality and identity get hilariously stirred up.
"An engaging new comedy by a young playwright with a probing, understated voice...Its quiet rewards steal up on you." -The New York Times
"Body Awareness is a smart, modest work about ordinary, flawed people, grasping for connection, but none of it feels small, thanks to Baker's sharp ear for the deeply painful and funny longings squirming under her characters' dialogue." -Time Out New York
