William G. Leonard, 81, of Warwick, died on Sunday, April 9, 2017. He was the husband of Merlyn P. (Parker) Leonard. They had been married for 59 years.
He was born on July 2, 1935 in Providence, a son of the late John and Grace (Carmody) Leonard. He was a graduate of Hope High School and Johnson and Wales University. He was a former member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, the United States Air Force and the Air Force Presidential Honor Guard. He served as a sergeant for the Fairbanks Police Department in Fairbanks, AK and then worked for United Parcel Service in Warwick, RI for 35 years. He was an accomplished musician, a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Pawtuxet Village and a former member of the Galilee Beach Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons; William J. Leonard, and his wife, Florence Leonard, of Warwick, RI; and Matthew J. Leonard, and his wife Jeanmarie Leonard, of South Kingstown, RI; and his daughter; Cynthia A. Hagerty, and her husband, Daniel J. Hagerty, of South Kingstown, RI. He was the beloved "Pop" to nine grandchildren including William J. Leonard, Matthew J. Leonard, Jack T. Leonard, Christian W. Leonard, Logan P. Leonard, Ryan J. Hagerty, Madeline E. Hagerty, Caroline R. Hagerty and the late Daniel J. Leonard. He is survived by his brother; Ronald Leonard, and his wife Norma, of Los Angeles, CA. He was pre-deceased by brothers John, Alfred, Thomas, and Richard Leonard; and his sister, Grace Pariseault.
Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend whose infectious sense of humor was enjoyed by all that knew him.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, April 13, at 9 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a service at 10 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 139 Ocean Avenue, Cranston. Burial with military honors will be in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.
