William H. Metcalf, 89, formerly of Frontier Rd., died March 4, 2012 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. He was the beloved husband of the late Janet H. (Richmond) Metcalf. Born in Providence, a son of the late Edward G. and Grace L. (Harry) Metcalf, he was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of Brown University. Bill was named a senior vice president of Amica Mutual Insurance Company in 1980, where he worked for 37 years before retiring in 1985.Bill's community involvement included leadership positions with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce; the Providence Advertising Club and Sales and Marketing Club; the Providence Rotary Club; Junior Achievement of RI; Meeting Street School; the YMCA and the Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of the former Turk's Head Club, the Squantum Association and the Providence Art Club, where several of his oil paintings were exhibited. He was a member of the Rhode Island Ski Runners Club, the National Ski Patrol and Warwick Country Club, where he was a former senior club champion. He is survived by his son, Stephen R. Metcalf of Coventry; his daughter, Susan Metcalf of Scarborough, Maine; and two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jessica. He was the brother of the late Frederick Metcalf and Edward G. Metcalf Jr. His family is remembering him as a generous and funny gentleman who had an unconditional love for his family. Calling hours were held March 7 at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home & Crematory, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick. A funeral service will be held March 8 at 11 a.m. in Swan Point Cemetery Historic Chapel, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence. Burial with military honors will follow.
