“This was a nice, solid performance by the team tonight,” CCRI head coach Rick Harris said. “We played intensely on defense and used that to create easy scoring opportunities. We also shared the ball, as evidenced by our 21 assists. The team is really getting what they’ve been taught all year – playing as a cohesive unit with our talent is going to make us a very tough team to beat.
The Knights will travel to Franklin, Mass. to play Region XXI rival Dean College this Thursday at 6 p.m. in pivotal Region XXI league game. The Lady Knights will face Dean afterwards, at 8 p.m., as part of their annual “Think Pink” breast cancer awareness night.
Lady Knights win 20th of season over Massasoit
The No. 15 CCRI Lady Knights basketball team hosted the Warriors of Massasoit Community College from Brockton, Mass. on Thursday evening. The Lady Knights defeated the Warriors 101-53. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 20-3 on the season and 5-0 in Region XXI play.
The Lady Knights began a little sluggishly but clicked into gear about halfway through the first half. Even with the slow start, CCRI took a 20-point lead into halftime up 45-25.
In the second half, the Lady Knights played better and increased their lead before pulling away. In addition, Lady Knights’ captain Jahira Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) became the No. 2 scorer on the CCRI all-time scoring list. Smith passed Denise Scott (912) and Claudia DeFaria (916) and now has 918 points for her career total. Smith needs just 39 points to pass Amanda Ward with 956 to become CCRI’s all-time leading scorer.
Smith led the Lady Knights with 21 points, seven assists and seven steals, while Lexi Barros (New Bedford, Mass.) added 20 points, including three three-pointers with seven steals. Also helping CCRI was Ahnyyah Jackson (Hackensack, N.J.), scoring 14 points. Nyjah Porcher (New Britain, Conn.) had 17 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals and Moe Plummer (Fairfield, Conn.) added 10 points and three steals.
“I thought we came out a little sluggishly,” CCRI head coach Kate Lynch said. “We made some mental mistakes and turned the ball over too much in the opening minutes. We started picking up the intensity with a few minutes left in the first half. Once we got going, we improved on both ends of the floor.”
