The forecast put a dampener on the opening of Tides Restaurant.

Tides has been a part of the culinary program at the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center for years. Only now, instead of being in a windowless room capable of seating 60 people at best, it occupies an addition to the center filled with natural light and capable of seating more than 100. The recently completed space was to have opened with a ribbon cutting Wednesday.

Another winter storm resulted in a change in plans. With the forecast of winds and wet snow on Wednesday afternoon, the ceremony was rescheduled for Monday starting at 11:30 a.m. and running until 1:30 p.m. Center director William McCaffrey said the ribbon cutting would happen about noon.

The event that will include clam cakes, crab cakes, chowder, pastries and cookies made by the students is open to the public. Former directors of the Career Center along with city and school officials are expected to participate.

Regular luncheon operations of Tides, where students will put their cooking knowledge to the test and learn restaurant operations including service with be on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays starting next Wednesday when the choice of entrees is stuffed chicken breast marsala and baked stuffed shrimp. With St. Patrick’s Day just two days away corned beef and cabbage will be on the menu on March 15. Meals including appetizer, entrée, dessert and coffee or tea range between $8 and $10. Tides is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and reservations are required. The number is 734-3161.

“Please,” urged pastry chef instructor Eva Niosi, “don’t call at 10 the day you’re planning to attend.”

Niosi said Tides would be serving fish and chips on Fridays at $8 and a buffet at $9.

The culinary program has an enrollment of 33 students. Niosi and Chef Instructor Ray Depot run the program.
