Worker hospitalized after being pinned between truck, police cruiser

Posted

A city worker was hospitalized June 6 after being pinned between a yard waste collection truck and a police cruiser, according to police reports.

The reports indicate the worker, identified in reports as 27-year-old Christopher St. Pierre, was conscious and alert at the scene. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later spoke with Officer Britton E. Kelly after receiving treatment for injuries to his lower extremities.

St. Pierre told Kelly that had was standing on the right rear platform of the truck as it began to back out of Toledo Avenue, which is a dead-end road.

He said that when he noticed the truck was backing up in the direction of a police cruiser at the intersection of Sabin Street and Toledo Avenue, he attempted to catch the attention of the driver. He was unable to do so before the truck backed into the driver’s side of the police vehicle, causing him to become pinned.

St. Pierre is said to have told police he saw no indication the driver of the truck was distracted. The officer in the police vehicle – who was working a traffic enforcement detail at the time – reports he also attempted to alert the driver and was unable to evade the collision due to the “suddenness” with which the event unfolded.

The driver is said to have told police he did not realize anything was wrong until he heard screaming and saw St. Pierre pinned between the vehicles.

No citations were issued nor any charges filed, the reports indicate.
