Working together for a cleaner coastline

To the Editor:

This past Saturday, I participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Day. On a day when people came together across the globe to clean up coastlines, Warwick residents worked together at four locations in the city. Save the Bay helped organize, and they documented what was collected at Conimicut Point, Goddard Park, Oakland Beach and Salter Grove.

Cleanup events are a great example of small, meaningful contributions we can make to our local community. One of the many benefits we have living in Warwick is our 39 miles of coastline. We must work to improve the water quality and marine ecosystems so future generations can enjoy this benefit for years to come.

At the Oakland Beach cleanup, roughly 10 teams of people filled trash bags with litter. Our group of three picked up 14 pounds of trash in just 40 minutes. Considering the majority of that weight was coffee cups, cigarette butts and empty beer cars, the haul was significant.

While I was saddened by the amount of litter we found, I am grateful and proud to be part of a community that came out in such strong numbers for the event. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the International Coastal Cleanup Day, as well as all those who, each day, formally or informally, work to help protect and improve our environment.

I have volunteered for Save the Bay many times over the past two years. I am amazed at what people leave behind but hopeful that we can make an impact the more time we spend raising awareness. I think it would be a great idea to have each council ward member really push out the volunteer days to the constituents. It helps bring communities together and you leave feeling such a sense of accomplishment.

This is a good example of communism today. In the near future volunteerism will be mandatory. Cleaning beaches is just the means to bring the community (diversity’s) together to set aside their differences and to focus on this common meaningless goal. It’s all about forming the NWO where individualism is the real enemy.

Robert: These are good people, doing good work, on their own time, that enhances the community. And it costs...nothing! I really fail to see ANY downside to any of this.
