Workshop at library today focuses on state's master transit plan

Posted

Four public workshops, the first of which will be held today at the Warwick Public Library, are being held this month as agencies working on the state’s first master transit plan narrow down the transportation options that will be included in the final plan which is slated to be completed later this year. The master plan project – called “Transit Forward RI 2040” – is intended to create a vision for the future of transit in Rhode Island. It is a collaborative effort between the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) and the Division of Statewide Planning.

The informal workshops are being held in different parts of the state this month so the public can have input on options that include bus service extended to more communities, higher frequencies on many bus routes, longer service hours, light rail service in the greater Providence area, and enhanced commuter rail service between Providence and Boston.

Today’s workshop at the library starts at 1 p.m. with a presentation at 1:30 in Room 113.

Officials encouraged the public to participate in the workshops. “I think the public will be interested to see ideas for introducing improved or new transit services across the state,” said RIPTA CEO Scott Avedisian. “We are hoping they will weigh in to help us prioritize these potential future investments.”

"The Division of Statewide Planning looks forward to continuing a close working relationship with RIPTA and RIDOT as we develop components of the Long Range Transportation Plan that addresses both present capabilities and future needs,” said Meredith Brady, Associate Director of Statewide Planning.

These workshops will be accessible to persons with disabilities and upon request, persons with limited English proficiency. RIPTA will provide translation and interpreter services for the deaf and hearing impaired, provided such a request is made at least 72 hours prior to the hearing date. A request for these services can be made in writing or by calling 784-9500 ex. 1242 or 800-745-5555 (RI Relay TDD).
