Y plans program for half-day kindergartners

Starting this September, Kent County YMCA will offer childcare to children who attend half-day kindergarten. The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“At the Kent County YMCA, we are committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen,” Rebecca Merritt, child care director at the Kent YMCA, said in a statement. “We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. In our after school programs, hundreds of youth are cultivating values, skills and relationships, and have an extra support system that encourages them to achieve success.”

The program will be open to Y members and non-members. Those interested should call Merritt at 828-0130 for registration information and program cost. Transportation for those attending Warwick public schools will be provided at no cost according to the Y.

According to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization, 15.1 million children in the United States are left unsupervised after 3 p.m. In Rhode Island, 27 percent of children are left alone and responsible for taking care of themselves.
