YMCA invites residents to 'eat cheap'

Posted

On Tuesday, May 16, the Cranston YMCA held its first YMCA Eat Cheap Night fundraiser. The event, which consisted of dinner donated by Texas Roadhouse and family games donated by Hasbro, was the first of its kind for the Cranston Y. All proceeds benefitted the YMCA Annual Support Campaign.

“The purpose of the event is to allow families to come together and spend time with each other. As a working father myself, I understand how hard it is to pick everyone up, get home, cook, clean and get everyone ready for the next day,” said YMCA Executive Director Cory Guglietti.

Approximately 30 people were in attendance to participate in the fundraiser. Guglietti was hoping to get 50 people in attendance but was very happy with the outcome considering it was the first time.

"My vision had families sitting together and playing games as a unit. What I didn't anticipate was kids playing together that didn't know each other, while parents were able to connect and talk to each other. It was a nice sense of community," said Guglietti. "We hope to secure different restaurants each month to sponsor the event and would love to offer a variety of options that reflect all the different cultures that are present in the city."

Hasbro has already committed donations supporting the event monthly through the end of the year.

The event was a fundraiser, but it is more than that to Guglietti and the Y. “If we can help people spend more time with those that are important to them, then the event is a hit,” said Guglietti. (Herald photos by Steve Popiel)
