Essay scores may alter count; Warwick students capture awards

Warwick students and teams racked up the medals and awards Sunday in the 23rd annual Rhode Island Academic Decathlon held at the Knight Campus of CCRI.

But, as it was learned immediately following the awards ceremony, the outcome of the tight competition could change. The issue came to light following the event when student score sheets were provided coaches. Some of those sheets showed no score for students who had participated in the essay portion of the contest.

It could not be immediately determined whether the scores had been tallied as part of the team final but omitted from the totals given coaches. If that were the case, the results would not change.

In order to resolve the issue, Pat Lehnertz, executive director of the decathlon, said scores would be tallied a second time.

Lehnertz said some individual medals could change and there is an outside chance that could affect overall team rankings. She expects to have this accomplished by the end of the week.

As it is, Warwick schools fared well in the event.

Bishop Hendricken High School placed second just behind Wheeler School of Providence. Warwick Veterans, which fielded two teams, placed sixth and Pilgrim placed 11th. Rocky Hill School placed in the middle of the pack just ahead of Toll Gate.

In the Super Quiz, which focused on the European Renaissance, Pilgrim High School placed second, a mere five points behind St. George's School of Newport with 3,065 points. In third place was Veterans High.

Individuals also shined in the daylong competition. In the Super Quiz, Hendricken's Derek Katznelson won a bronze in the honors division while William Dilauro of Vets won a gold and Brice Cantrell of Hendricken and Veronica Flaherty of Vets tied for silver in the scholastic division. In the varsity division, Kayla Flynn of Vets won a gold and Phillip Scavitti a bronze in Super Quiz.
