At some point they need to realize there is no money to pay for the unrealistic benefits that were promised to them and they're better off taking adjustments to bring things more in alignment with reality than being screwed in the end when they're near or in retirement.

All your union leadership cares about is dues, if they really cared about your best interests they'd negotiate realistic contracts within the resources of the business you're working for. Taxpayers are not an infinite cash cow.
