Sidney is my youngest granddaughter. She is 7 years old. She has two older sisters and an older brother. I’m amazed at how different they all are.

Sidney is the most like me. She loves to dress up but isn’t afraid of getting dirty. We call her a “viking” because when she falls or hurts herself in some way, she stands up shakes it off and says, “I’m OK.” She has a really good heart and will reach out to the new kid in school or the child standing alone in the corner.

She has adapted well to this pandemic. Often when we are out and about, she reminds me to wear my mask!

I asked her how she feels about distance learning. She lives in Stonington, Connecticut. Their district has decided to do a few days in person and a few days distance learning. She told me she is looking forward to meeting her new teacher and learn second grade stuff.

She was a child that really benefited from hands-on learning and struggled with learning at home. It was hard for her to stay focused with a computer screen compared to a real person. Her district did some creative things, but I could see her fade away as time went on. She’s very bright and responds to being around other children and the teacher.

I asked her what she was most excited about with regards to the upcoming school year. She told me she is excited about getting a new backpack and seeing her best friend, Kallan!

Sometimes it’s encouraging to see things through the eyes of a child. They seem to be able to roll with this, way more than us adults!

Sidney will be starting school in two weeks. I’m really interested to see how the schools maneuver their way through snack time, lunch time and recess. I can’t imagine being 7 years old and having to sit at a desk for the entire day. I hope they come up with some creative ways to teach and play for my grandchildren’s sake and all the children that have seen their worlds turned upside down.
