With an enrollment of 25 students, the  2022 Warwick Police Citizens Police Academy held its first meeting last Thursday. And at that initial meeting Daniel Maggiacomo, who has run the program for 20 years, announced his retirement.  Officers Mark Jandreau and James Wenneman are now running the 12-week academy that meets Thursday evenings with the exception of three weekend classes where students visit the firing range for a class in firearms safety and get to fire live ammunition if they choose; are trained in CRP and application of Narcan and a visit to Quonset to drive a cruiser through the obstacle training course.  The academy is free. Applicants should be 18 years old or older.  Enrollment is in July and positions are filled on a first come first served basis.  Maggiacomo said those not making a class are first on the list for the next class. He said during his tenure as academy director  he sought to have family members of police officers and elected officials enroll so they have an understanding of the department and the issues it deals with. He also enrolled interns from schools and college interested in law enforcement.  (Warwick Beacon photo)
