A resolution to take up some more rituals and traditions

All of us have  rituals and traditions by what exactly is the difference?

A ritual is something you do that gives you a sense of calmness and order in your life.  In the morning, as soon as I rise, I always do the following…. make my bed, let my dog out, feed the birds and finally get myself a cup of hot steaming coffee.  The last few weeks I have added reading a passage from “Battlefield of the Mind, New Testament”.  It was a gift from a dear friend. I find it very centering and helps me set the tone of being giving, kind and grateful for the day.

Rituals aren’t always positive.  Having a cigarette after a meal  and  watching  the tube before bedtime may make you feel good (I’m guilty of the later) but aren’t always great for your end goal.  I’m really looking at my habits and making them into rituals.  Take for instance, taking a bath or shower.  Of course, it’s a necessary part of life, however there are ways to bring it to a new level and make it more enjoyable. For Christmas I bought my self a beautiful teakwood bench for my shower.  It allows me to sit while I shower.  I’ve also added lots of great smelling soaps and body washes.  I play spa music in the bathroom.  Now my five minute get it done habit is a wonderful experience, a great ritual.  Not every time, but most times.  I’m probably using more hot water, but hey, I’m worth it!  Now on to traditions.  A tradition is something you do usually around a holiday.  Most times it has been passed from generation to generation.  Often time, it has to do with food.

Traditions are passed down in a group or family.  Food served around holidays are very traditional.  Talk to five different people and they will tell you what they serve for a holiday meal.  Most times it was what their mom served to them.  I have many of those traditions.  Italian wedding soup on Thanksgiving and stuffed shells on Christmas are always on my menu.  Traditions get passed down in families.  I’m not ready to give up preparing these yummy foods yet.  I did pass down a decorating tradition.  I’m sure as you pulled out your holiday decorations, a lot of the things had a meaning or a story.  This year I gave my “Patriots Village”, to my daughter Samantha and her significant other, John.  I started collecting these pieces over fifteen years ago.  John makes a beautiful village each year.  This year it has three levels.  I thought passing down this tradition to him, would be fun and less work for me!  I have decided that in the new year I’m going to define and expand of my rituals and traditions. I want to focus on ones that enrich my life, make myself and others feel good!  Share your rituals or traditions with me at SixtiesAndSexy@gmail.com. I may do story on them!
