Anthony J. Carcieri, 91, a retired schoolteacher for the Warwick School Department and Child Advocate for the State of Rhode Island, passed away Saturday April 17, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife and son. He was the beloved husband of Joan C. (Brown) Carcieri for 50 years.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Mario and Santina (Farrara) Carcieri. He attended La Salle Academy in Providence, where he soon exhibited the prowess for learning that would lead him to a career in the field of Education. However, he chose to spend four years in the service joining the Air Force and spending the majority of his years in Europe, mostly Germany, as an air craft technician. Upon the completion of his enlistment, he continued his education at Rhode Island College of Education, graduating with a bachelor’s degree with emphasis on mathematics and chemistry. This led to a position of teaching chemistry for the Town of Coventry where he would remain for only a few short years. A most dedicated and conscientious teacher, he would soon become Department Chair of the Science Department at Warwick Veterans High school. During this phase of his career, he earned three advanced degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Stanford University, and Marquette University where he was invited to matriculate in the Jesuit School of Medicine. With a distinguished and extensive background in chemistry, he then joined the faculty as an instructor in the Chemistry Department which would prove to his last position as an active classroom participant.

Not wishing to remove himself entirely from the joys he derived from education, he was afforded the opportunity to become a child advocate for the State of Rhode Island and remained in this position for a many good years, serving the youth in need of adult guidance. But our dad was a man who also realized soon on many years before that civic responsibility was something that one should not shirk when given the opportunity to improve our collective wellbeing. Long noted for his intelligence and civic pride, Anthony soon found himself immersed in politics eventually serving as Chair of the Health, Education, and Welfare Committee under the former Speaker of the House, Matthew Smith. He also represented his district in City matters and became a strong voice in City of Warwick Politics. He served as State Representative for the House.

Our Dad, Husband, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, and Great-great-grandfather was more than a working person as he always found time to enjoy so many things with his friends and family. Along with his family, he managed to enjoy many different sources of interest during a long a richly served life. In earlier years, sailing with his first Sea Sprite, and then Bristol 30, in the Bay with Mom and friends gave way to many beautiful winter days in Florida travelling the country in their motor home. Our dad enjoyed a long and well lived life…one filled with compassion, caring, and for these last few years, one in which his faith showed us the true extent of his character and was a proud member of the TriCity Elks Lodge 14 in Warwick.

Anthony was the loving father of Anthony Chris Carcieri, Raymond Ballou and the late Carol J. Coutcher; loving grandfather of Melissa, John, Braeden and Mason; loving great-grandfather of Christopher, Abbey, Nicholas and Jackson; loving great-great-grandfather of Aubree and Preston; brother of the late Violet Signorelli.
