Ash and Bone let the riffs fly with debut EP

She’s gone by such names including “The Maiden of Madness” and “Maiden X” for over a decade in a few different artistic capacities, but Providence musician Stephanie Carey has always been original with each creative output. Her latest endeavor is Ash and Bone, a band she’s the lead vocalist for with guitarist Diego Villareal, bassist Chris Potter and drummer Tony Edwin rounding out the rest of the lineup. Together they exhibit an amplified fusion of blues, punk and ‘90s era alternative rock. This is best exemplified in their debut self-titled EP that came out on April 16, which packs a sonic punch from beginning to end. It’s one of those records that sounds great when the volume is turned all the way up.

There are a few themes that are tied into the EP, such as misogyny, internal angst, relationships, heartbreak and the everyday grind of the real world. These topics are all conveyed through Carey’s fantastic vocal range. She brings an incredible amount of emphasis with a flair that walks the fine line between being operatic and intense. She doesn’t pull any punches while keeping it genuine with lyrics that can resonate with being pissed off as well as feeling alienated. The rest of the band know how to shred with supreme loudness, together Villareal, Potter and Edwin create a massive wall of sound that compliments Carey’s singing in excellent fashion.

Villareal’s guitar sets the tone for “Already There” while Edwin’s drumming has a major presence along with Carey’s defiant ways on the mic. “Floored” is the fastest track off of the record which leans more towards the thrash metal style than any of the other songs. Potter’s bass sets the structure for “Inequity” with its deep tone adding a sludgy quality to the overall instrumentation. “Pine” is Ash and Bone’s take on a heartbreak ballad that embraces a soulful aesthetic and “No Matter Blues” has something going on that’s similar to The Black Keys. Concluding the EP is “S**t Show”, which is a proper finale to a kickass record that has each member leaving their finishing touches.

Ash and Bone have been playing regularly around the Providence area for a good while now and they’re fantastic live so go see them at their next show. You can find out when that is happening via their Facebook page at facebook.com/AshandBoneband. To check out the new EP, give it a listen and perhaps even make a purchase, log on to the band’s Bandcamp page at ashandbone.bandcamp.com. You can probably even go see them play a show and buy a physical copy of the record to kill two birds with one stone. No matter what you do, give it a listen and dive right in because it’s definitely worth your attention.
