To the Editor,

A member of my family may contract the COVID-19 virus. A friend or neighbor may die from it. I fervently hope neither occurs. That’s why everyone I know closely follows state and CDC guidelines.

But I’m also thankful! I’m thankful that my family, friends and neighbors live in the USA, a country with the wealth, ingenuity and willpower to combat this medical crisis. Yes, many will die but, compared to some countries around the globe, our society will survive.

Imagine living in parts of Asia or sub-Saharan Africa. Imagine having little to eat, unclean water, and no societal assistance before the virus struck; and now having to deal with rampant disease all around you. Not only will there be massive deaths in such countries, revolutions and civil insurrections may result.  Governments may fall.

We in America bemoan our current circumstances. We complain about our mismanaged government with its self-serving, career politicians. Never has there been a better argument for term limits than now. However, our constitutional republic will survive; unlike some governments around the world.

Yes, worry and to be very cautious, but also be very thankful.  As you wash your hand with clean, hot, running water; as you buy groceries from mostly stocked shelves; and as you are cared for by dedicated, caring medical professionals, be thankful that you live in the best country on earth. Give thanks to our Founding Fathers’ wisdom and to the capitalism they ensured would prevail.
