First arts show at Oakland Beach Fireman’s Club

The Oakland Beach Fireman’s Club is seeking photographers and artists for their first annual arts and crafts show. The event will be on Sunday June 13. Vendors can purchase a 10x10 table space for $25. Those interested in showcasing their art, contact Kevin at (401) 737-4786.

Oakland Beach Association to meet tonight

Mayor Frank Picozzi will be the special guest at the Oakland Beach Association’s meeting tonight, Thursday, May 13 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the skateboard park across the street from Oakland Beach Elementary School. Members should bring lawn chairs and questions. All Oakland Beach residents are welcome to attend.

Next month, featured guests at the June 10 meeting will be Luke Murray of the city planning office, and Bill Facente of community development. They will provide updates and take questions on improvements to the beach that are underway with finding from federal and state grants. More details to follow.

Friends of Salter Grove launch new online guide

On Saturday, May 15, join the Friends of Salter Grove and special guests Mayor Frank Picozzi and Parks and Recreation Director Bev Wiley to celebrate the launch of the new Salter Grove online guide, www.saltergrove.org. The event will take place at the George B. Salter Memorial Grove on Narragansett Parkway at 10 a.m. Attendees are asked to wear masks and follow social distancing.

Drive-through food pantry

Spring Green Memorial Church located at 1350 Warwick Ave, will be holding their monthly drive-through food pantry on Saturday, May 15. Rally for worldwide freedom at Rocky Point

Worldwide Demonstration is holding a Rhode Island rally on Saturday, May 15 at Rocky Point Park from 1 to 4 p.m. The event will feature speakers, music, and educational information. For more information about the rally, visit www.worldwidedemonstration.com.

Dining out at St. Mark’s

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on West Shore Road will offer an outside pasta dining experience on Sunday, May 16 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the church. To reserve or order, call (401) 737-3127, Monday through Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $12 per person, children 5 and under are free. Credit cards are accepted in person or online at www.stmarkswarwick.org. In the event of rain, it will be a take out dinner.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is hosting a series of free, virtual presentation throughout the month of May. Each session will include two speakers, one who shares an informative, research-based presentation, and one who is a young adult with a mental health condition who speaks about their journey of recovery. Audience members will be allowed to ask questions and gain understanding o fan often misunderstood topic. Through dialogue, we can help grow the movement and end the stigma. On Monday May 17, from 6 to 7 p.m., NAMI is hosting Ending the Silence for Students, a free session geared towards middle and high school students, on how to get help for themselves or a friend. Participants will learn fact, statistics, and ways to talk to peers, parents, and school staff.

History of the Narragansett Park Race Track

From the 1930s through the 60s, the Narragansett Park Race Track drew celebrities, socialites, and wealth gamblers who hobnobbed in the 4,000-seat clubhouse, while bettors and scruffier neighborhoods filled the stands. On Monday, May 17, Richard Ring of the Rhode Island Historic Society will bring back the glory days of this premier racetrack in a virtual program sponsored by the Each Greenwich Preservation Society. Rick will show photographs from a collection acquired by the RIHS in 2018 and share what he has learned. The Zoom program begins at 7:30 p.m. To RSVP, email info@eghps.org.

Murder Mystery book group meets May 19

Join other fans of the mystery genre at the Warwick Public Library’s Mystery Book Group. The next meeting is Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. The group will be discussing And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, a story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets—until they die. Crepe Corner grand opening

Plenty of treasures

The Caroline Caprio Scholarship & Giving Fund will be holding a yard sale to help raise funds to assist RI families struggling with a brain tumor diagnosis. 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to provide financial assistance and emotional support to brain tumor patients and caregivers. The event will be held at 3284 West Shore Road on May 22 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Come browse and purchase all kinds of household and personal items such ad furniture, collectable, jewelry, handbags, adult and children’s clothing, sports equipment, tools, pet supplies, rugs, lamps, and more. St. Kevin Church kicks off summer with free concert

St. Kevin Church, located at 333 Sandy Lane, is welcoming the 88th Army Band in a patriotic concert on Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. In-person attendance is welcome; all current health guidelines will be followed. The event will also be live streamed on the parish website at www.stkevin-stbenedict.org. The concert pays tribute to the military and first responders, and is a great kick off to summer.

Memorial Day outdoor marketplace

Shop over 80 vendors, crafters, and food trucks at the Crown Plaza Hotel at 801 Greenwich Ave on May 29 and 30. The event—sponsored by local craft jam business, We Be Jammin’—will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors can apply by emailing weselljam@gmail.com.

A day of hope

Warwick Hope Assembly of God has partnered with several local churches to organize Hope Day, an event that extends a helping hand to families, single moms, the unemployed or underemployed, and the homeless. The event will provide free lunches, groceries, community service booklets, and goodie bags, as well as entertainment like live music and performances from local dance teams, clowns, and superheroes.

The free, drive through event will be held on June 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Warwick Veterans Middle School on West Shore Road. For more information, call (401) 732-0634.

Support the paws that enforce the laws

Join the Warwick K-9 unit for a silent auction at the Apponaug Brewery, located at 334 Knight Street, on June 5. The event is free and open to the public. Classic car show rolls to St. Mark’s

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the West Shore Health Center are hosting a classic car show on Saturday, June 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature vendors, a live DJ, food and beverages, and a 50/50 raffle. Raffle prizes include a TV, Air Fryer, Keurig and outdoor fire pit. Silent auction prizes include a kayak, Ring doorbell, and Google Assistant. Come enjoy the day and the classic cars. Warwick Vets reunion rescheduled

The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School class of 1960 reunion has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18. The event will be held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 1 Rhodes Place, from 12 to 4 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. No More Hunger Walk planned for October

A group of local churches, Woodbury Union, Lakewood Baptist, St. Benedict, St, Kevin, and St. Mark’s, are organizing a walk to end hunger. The No More Hunger Walk, an event to raise awareness of and end food insecurity in the community, is currently being planned for October. Socialize with PSC in-person programming

After a long year, the Pilgrim Senior Center is once again offering activities and programs in-person starting the week of May 17, with more added after Memorial Day. Programs include, Stitcher’s Workshop on Mondays at 1 p.m., Quilting and Needlecraft on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. Yarnigans on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., Studio 27 Painting Group Thursdays at 1 p.m., Pilgrim Theater Stars on Fridays at 10:30, Knit Wits on Fridays at 1 p.m., and Poetry Readers on Fridays at 1 p.m.

IF the reopening goes well, the center hopes to add more classes like diabetes support and prevention, wood painting, ceramics, and healthy living. Any activity that necessitates distances less than 6 feet will not be offered at this time.

Virtual programming will continue. Virtual programs include chair yoga on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., and low impact aerobics at 9:30 a.m. and gentle yoga at 6 p.m. on Thursdays.

Operation Stand Down helps veterans at City Hall

Members of Operation Stand Down Rhode Island will be on hand at Warwick City Hall to help veterans with housing, employment, legal services, and more. Rent Relief RI is now accepting applications from tenants and landlords seeking financial assistance.
