The Tri-City Elks launches its 2021 car show season on May 27 from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will take place at Lodge 14 at 1915 West Shore Road in Warwick, and will feature food from the Elks’ Tiki Bar, a 50/50 raffle, and live music from DJ Rob Caramante. Classic cars and motorcycles are welcome. The show is held every Thursday, weather permitting.
St. Kevin Church, located at 333 Sandy Lane, is welcoming the 88th Army Band in a patriotic concert on Friday, May 28 at 7 p.m. Admission is free. In-person attendance is welcome; all current health guidelines will be followed. The event will also be streamed on the parish website at www.stkevin-stbenedict.org. The concert pays tribute to the military and first responders, and is a great kick off to summer.
Westbay Farm is hosting its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1351 Centerville Road. Plants for sale include herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Cash, checks, and credit cards are all accepted at the sale. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Westbay Farm, which provides fresh produce to Westbay Marketplace. On Monday, May 31 at 10 a.m., Representative Camilla Vella-Wilkinson and Commander Sal Caiozzo, of the Chapter 9 Disabled American Veterans (DAV), have partnered to host a Memorial Day wreath laying and flag retirement ceremony. The event will take place at Warwick Veterans Park located at 2401 West Shore Road. The general public is invited to bring their old and tattered U.S. flags to be retired. To prepare the flag, guests are asked to cut the red and white stripes into strips; the blue field of stars may remain as a solid square.

The Warwick Public Library, in a partnership with Grandview Heights Public Library in Ohio and Dr. Srinath Sampath from Test Accelerator, is hosting a free ACT crash course for high school students on Friday, June 4. The Warwick Assembly of God has partnered with several local churches to organize Hope Day, an even that extends a helping hand to families, single parents, the unemployed or underemployed, and the unhoused. The event will provide free lunches, groceries, community service booklets, and goodie bags, as well as entertainment like live music and performances from local dance teams, clowns, and superheroes.

The Oakland Beach Summer Basketball League is searching for new players, aged 17 and older. The season starts June 19, with 7 games guaranteed, not counting playoffs. The Warwick Police Department is hosting an active threat and workplace violence training on Monday, June 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. This free lecture is open to members of human resources, security, security directors, risk managers, threat assessment teams, and religious facility security teams from private businesses, commercial facilities, private schools, and houses of worship. The event will be held in the community room at the department’s headquarters at 99 Veterans Memorial Drive and will focus on perimeter protection, access control, warning signs, police response, and post incident response. The City of Warwick, We Be Jammin’, and Ocean State Food Truck Festivals presents a food truck fest on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, held at Rocky Point Park, will feature over 100 vendors, over 20 food trucks, and live music. Admission is free. Bring a chair or blanket, and hang out with friends and family in the sprawling fields against the beautiful ocean scenery.
Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 139 Ocean Ave in Cranston, will be offering $5 take out hot and cold breakfast boxes on Gaspee Parade Day on June 12. Boxes will be handed out from 8 to 10 a.m. The Gaspee Days Ecumenical Service will also be held on June 12 at 8 a.m. before the parade starts. Attend the service, claim your spot on the parade route, and then stop by for a breakfast box. Hot breakfast includes cinnamon French toast sticks and sausage with maple syrup and a banana. Since 1959, the Over 65 Golf League has worked with public golf courses to offer a league for the state’s senior residents. The Warwick Veterans Memorial High School class of 1960 reunion has been rescheduled for Saturday Sept. 18. The event will be held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet at 1 Rhodes Place. There will be a social hour from 12 to 1 p.m., and then a luncheon buffet from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Rhodes on the Pawtuxet is now accepting applications for crafters, vendors, and artists for the 7th annual Rhode Island Shriners Fez-tival of Trees. The event is scheduled for November 27 and 28. In 2019, over 3,000 guests strolled through the fundraising event.
Vendors have a few space options this year. Options include 8’ table in the mezzanine area for one day at $75, 8x8 front lobby space for both days at $200, and 10x10 front lobby space for both days at $250. Electricity is available for an extra $25, and advance notice is required.

The Warwick Departments of Recreation, Public Works, and the Sewer Authority are hiring for a number of positions. To be eligible, applicants must be Warwick residents with plans to continue their education full-time in September. The deadline for all applications is June 4, and applications can be accessed at www.warwickri.gov/personnel-department/pages/employment-opportunities.
The Department of Public Works and Warwick Sewer Authority are hiring summer laborers. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The pay rate is $11.50 to $15 per hour, depending on experience. All applicants must be 18 years old as of June 15.
The Department of Public Works is also hiring for the beach litter crew. This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The pay rate is $11.50 per hour, and students aged 14 to 17 are encouraged to apply. Working papers are required for anyone under 18 years old.
The Parks and Recreation Department is hiring beach fee collectors. This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, but some part-time positions may be available. Applicants must be available to work weekends and holidays. The pay rate is $11.50 per hour, and applicants must be 18 years old as of June 15.
Lifeguards are needed for all city indoor and outdoor swimming facilities for the summer 2021 season. There is no residency requirement for the lifeguard positions. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must bring a photo ID with verification of birth to apply. Lifeguard certification cards must be original, up-to-date, and not due to expired before Sept. 30, 2021. Both full-time and part-time beach lifeguard positions are available for City Park Beach, Conimicut Beach, and Oakland Beach. Applicants must be able to work holidays and weekends. All applicants must be pool certified and have Rhode Island Non-Surf Lifeguard certification. The pay rate is $13.25 to $16.25 per hour, depending on experience.
Both full-time and part-time positions are available for McDermott Pool. Applicants must be able to work weekends and holidays, and pool certification is required. The pay rate is $13.25 to $16.25 per hour depending on experience.
If applicants are not lifeguard certified, but are competent swimmers and comfortable in deep water, they may be eligible for training and certification by the City of Warwick.
