After losing its first match of the season against Cumberland, the Bishop Hendricken wrestling rebounded to dominate the visiting Chariho Chargers 60-22 last Thursday.

Nine Hawks won via pin on the night, and Hendricken coach Kevin Hennessey was proud of his team’s response after losing to the Clippers by just one point the match before.

“It’s important (to get the win), but to be honest, that Cumberland match could have gone to either of us. I don’t think that is going to change anything that we’re doing or what we are planning to do moving forward. We have the same goals in mind, we just need to keep working hard towards achieving those goals,” said Hennessey.

Noah Sclama, Andrew Fallon, Tyler Keaney, Isaiah Guerrero, Nike Fine, Isaiah Emmanuel, Cam Bailey and Adolfo Betancur all won by fall for Hendricken. Aidan Zabbo and Mason Preble won via forfeit. Sclama shined at 120 pounds for Hendricken, pinning Chariho’s Christian Fortune in under a minute.

Chariho’s Wade Husing, Dominic Bonanno and Nate Marchione won their matches by fall for the Chargers while Kyle Merritt took home a majority decision win at 145 pounds.

The Hawks improved to 7-1 with the victory on a night in which Hendricken adjusted it’s lineup, including moving Fine up a division which ultimately proved to be successful.

“It was good to see, it was exciting. We bumped Nick Fine up from 160 to 170 today against a really tough opponent (in Chariho’s James Dougherty), we did it because we just wanted to see it happen. Overall, the kids wrestled well and it worked out for us,” said Hennessey.

The defending state champions now enter the second half of their schedule. With matches against teams such as powerhouse Coventry, Cranston West and North Providence remaining, Hennessey hopes to see his club continue to improve as a unit and to make a push for its 13th title.

“We are still growing. We have two seniors in the lineup so we’re still a little young. Although we have a lot of tough guys in the lineup, we have some kids that are still learning. We just need to keep helping them catch up,” said Hennessey. “Our goal is to win out, win all of our dual meets and win at the state tournament. I don’t think that we’re ever satisfied, so we’re just going to keep pushing.”
