The Department of Environmental Management’s Division of Law Enforcement is investigating a fatal boating incident that occurred about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwich Bay off the city of Warwick.

A 23-foot sailboat took on water and sunk, and two unresponsive victims were located. The victims were recovered by the Marine Task Force boats and brought into the Oakland Beach Boat Ramp.

Chief of Police Col. Brad Connor said Wednesday that both a police boat and a Fire Department boat with the dive team assisted in the search. DEM, Warwick Fire and Warwick Police were continuing to search for the vessel Wednesday morning.

According to an Oakland Beach resident, two drones were used in the effort to locate the craft.

According to the DEM, the victims were Robert Puchta, 62, and Luann Cole, 66, both from Warwick.

The matter remains under investigation by Environmental Police, Warwick Fire and Warwick Police.

According to Facebook posts from Cole, the boat, named “Lobo’s Toy,” had been docked at Mid Cove Marina in Oakland Beach. While another report suggested the boat had been on its maiden voyage when the accident occurred, the Facebook posts indicate the boat had been out previously.
