Virtual Earth Day celebration

Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc., a Cranston-based non-profit arts organization, will be celebrating Earth Day with a virtual celebration on April 22 at 7 p.m. The event also highlights a recent publication from Notable Works, Voices of the Earth: The Future of Our Planet, a collection of poetry from local authors addressing issues of climate change. Special guests include Tina Cane, Rhode Island’s Poet Laureate, as well as other local writers and artists like Aubrey Atwater, Janet Barron, David Dragone, Noreen Inglesi, Thomas Lane, Sarah Lettes, Karina Lutz, and Patricia McAlpine. Warwick Animal Shelter volunteer meeting

It’s been over a year since the Warwick Animal Shelter has hosted a volunteer meeting. Join other like-minded, animal-loving volunteers on Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. at the shelter to discuss upcoming fundraising opportunities. The meeting will be held outdoors so please bring a chair, mask, and your calendar. 

Earth Day Coastal Clean Up

Join the Pawtuxet Village Association Garden Group for a clean up of Stillhouse Cove and Pawtuxet Park on Saturday, April 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers are encouraged to bring rakes and gardening gloves. Rain date is May 8th. 

WPD Drug Return

The Warwick Police Department is hosting a drug return event on Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring unused, unwanted, or expired prescriptions to the Warwick Police Station at 99 Veterans Memorial Drive for a safe, confidential disposal. 

Tune-up Tuesday: Advertising vs. Marketing

Join the Central RI Chamber of Commerce and Advantage Marketing Information President Richard Nagele on Tuesday, April 27 at 8 a.m. for a workshop focused on boosting your business’s advertising and marketing. CPR and first aid virtual course

The Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce and Torrey Enterprises, LLC is hosting a CPR and first aid training course on April 29 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The training, held via Zoom, costs $50 per person, and discounts are available for multiple family members in the same household. This training will teach you how to take care of a loved one, friend, or complete stranger. The course covers what to do in the event of heart attack, stroke, diabetic emergency, seizure, breathing difficulties, cuts, scrapes, burns, broken bones, bee stings, hypothermia, heat stroke, and more. Run for the Roses

COVID won’t stop the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center’s traditional Kentucky Derby fundraiser, although participants won’t be gathering at the Warwick Country Club in their best of derby finery to watch the race. Instead, the derby will be celebrated virtually with an online auction and live stream of the race, on Saturday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. But you needn’t wait until May 1 to participate. Endangered Species Art Contest

Calling young artists and wildlife enthusiasts: enter the 4th annual Endangered Species Youth Art Contest. Entries from students K-12 must be received by April 30. Endangered Species Day, May 21, is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species, their habitats, and learn what we can do to protect them. New show at Warwick Center for the Arts

The Warwick Center for the Arts, located next to City Hall at 3259 Post Road, will be hosting artwork from the local group, Painters Over Light. The exhibit opens April 17 and can be viewed Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Socialize, exercise with PSC virtual programming

Join the Pilgrim Senior Center in virtual programs from the comfort of your own home. Classes are free, and no prior experience is necessary. Operation Stand Down helps veterans at City Hall

Starting Wednesday, April 21, members of Operation Stand Down Rhode Island will be on hand at Warwick City Hall to help veterans with housing, employment, legal services, and more. FEMA Funeral Assistance

FEMA will be reimbursing people for funeral costs incurred from losing someone to COVID-19. People can apply starting April 12 by calling 1-844-684-6333. Rental Assistance

Rent Relief RI is now accepting applications from tenants and landlords seeking financial assistance. RI has received $200 million in rent relief funds from the federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program to provide residents with rent and utility relief. RI Housing offers loans

RI Housing’s Hardest Hit Fund Rhode Island (HHFRI) program is offering zero interest, forgivable loans to eligible Rhode Island homeowners who became unemployed or underemployed due to the COVID pandemic and are struggling to make mortgage payments. Loan proceeds may provide homeowners with up to 6 months of mortgage payment assistance. Learn more and apply at www.rihousing.com/hhfri.

Be Kind RI

The RI Community Food Bank, Age Friendly Rhode Island, and Family Services of RI has launched a partnership called Be Kind RI, a program that helps high-risk individuals and communities receive the help they need during the pandemic, particularly food assistance. Be Kind RI connects neighbors with volunteers through text alerts to coordinate food deliveries from grocery stores and pantries. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and undergo a background check. Be Kind RI is open to residents experiencing COVID risk factors, including those 65, anyone with underlying health conditions, those in quarantine or isolation, anyone experiencing a lack of childcare, and those who would otherwise have difficulty obtaining food. Weekly meditation at MoonStone Art Studio

MoonStone Art Studio and Inspired Kundalini Yoga are hosting a weekly meditation on Sunday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the MoonStone Art Studio at 953 Namquid Drive. The next class is Sunday, April 25. The in-person meditation is open to all, no experience required. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket, pillow, or yoga mat. Focus on mental health

NAMI Rhode Island is the state affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It offers an array of education and training programs and services for individuals living with mental illness, family members, schools, providers, and the general public. These programs draw on the experience of individuals with mental illness and family members who have learned to live well with their illnesses and are eager to help others, as well as the expertise of mental health professionals and educators.
