Ceiling damage at Vets won't delay school opening

On July 29 it felt as though the sky was falling at Warwick Veterans Middle School.

About six ceiling tiles came loose and fell, abruptly ending the extended school year program, but Superintendent Lynn Dambruch assures parents and families that the damage will not impact the start of the school year.

According to Steve Gothberg, director of construction and capital projects, for Warwick Public Schools, the tiles fell in a D-wing classroom, but no other classrooms were impacted.

Gothberg did not share why the tiles fell, but did say that the original contractor “stepped up above and beyond” to fix the damage, and toured the building to assess for other damage.

“It was brought to the School Department’s attention this afternoon that there are potential issues with the suspended ceilings in the classrooms at Veterans Middle School,” reads an email sent to parents and families on the 29th. “Out of an abundance of caution the school will need to be closed while inspections and repairs are completed.”

Students and teachers were able to return to the school on Friday, July 30 to pick up Chromebooks and other materials left behind.

Dambruch said the repairs “should be complete by the end of next week” but more details will be shared during the August 10 School Committee meeting.
