Beacon unveils All-City teams

This week, the Warwick Beacon sports department is honoring some of Warwick’s best athletes of the winter season with its All-City teams. As always, it was a fun-filled few months of big-time performances as we saw plenty of athletes shine on the biggest stages. Athletes are selected based on factors including statistical performance, postseason success as well as leadership impact on and off the court, ice, etc. Congratulations to all of our athletes! - Alex Sponseller, Sports Editor 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Player of the Year: Damola Oremosu, Toll Gate

Damola Oremosu made a splash after transferring to Toll Gate this year, immediately becoming a key starter for the Titans, who wound up reaching the Division III semifinals. Oremosu led the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game, while also leading the way in rebounds and blocks.

Lily Hall returned this winter season as one of the few upperclassmen on the Pilgrim roster and helped the team bounce back to the postseason. Hall was a steady presence on both ends of the floor and put up double figures in the team’s semifinal appearance against Lincoln School.

Athlete of the Year: Brandon Wolfenden, Pilgrim

Brandon Wolfenden continued to rank among the state’s best throwers this winter season and finished by taking second in the shot put at the state championship. He also took first place in the Class A Championship two weeks prior.

Athlete of the Year: Vanessa Jones, Toll Gate

Vanessa Jones became the country’s best weight thrower this winter season, as she won the Rhode Island state championship, the New England championship, and went on to win the USA National title. Jones will return next season as a senior and is an early favorite to repeat as champion.

Gymnast of the Year:  Mackenzie Long, Warwick

Mackenzie Long put on a show for the Warwick co-op at the state championships and reached the podium by taking sixth on the beam at the individual championships.

Swimmer of the Year: Tristan Jordan, Hendricken

Tristan Jordan is the Beacon’s boys swimmer of the year after guiding the Hawks to their second straight state title. Jordan was a member of the team’s relay team that took first in the 400 to clinch the title. He also finished second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 free.

Katelyn Watson was a leader in and out of the water for the Titans this winter, having an impressive showing at the division championships by finishing second in the 200 yard freestyle, sixth in the backstroke and fourth as a member of the 400 yard free relay team.

Frank Tillinghast enjoyed a season that will be remembered in Hendricken history forever, scoring the game-winning goals in both the semifinals and in triple overtime of the state championship against Prout. Tillinghast was second in points for the Hawks as a defenseman, making an impact on each end of the ice and in the big moments.

Wrestler of the Year: Allison Patten, Pilgrim

Allison Patten cemented her place as the state’s top female wrestler by winning her second straight state title while earning the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award in the process. She went on to take second place at the New England Championships.
