Chipotle challenges pandemic

While most restaurants are struggling to stay open, along comes a new restaurant built right at the entrance to a struggling cinema complex that has opened one new movie in five months, and just down the road and across the street from three restaurants that have closed.

Plans were underway before the pandemic and the franchise opted to go ahead with their recent opening. Without the anticipated business from the theater crowds, Chipotle has proven its popularity by drawing business to its new location.

Daughter Robin lives down the road in East Greenwich and is thrilled with the opening of the restaurant, which is presently doing a big business in the surrounding neighborhoods.

After our first movie in five months at the Warwick Showcase, we discovered that we could access the parking lot without having to go out to Division Street.

All of the rules were being followed, including social distancing, wearing face masks and standing behind plexiglass barriers. The friendly staff worked efficiently with masks and gloves, dishing up the large variety of rice, meats and toppings.

Joyce ordered the barbacoa (shredded beef) at $8, while I had carnitas (shredded pork) at $7.50.

Salsa comes in mild, medium and hot. We find the medium suits our taste. You have a choice of white or brown rice and black or pinto beans. A variety of toppings, including a delicious sautéed pepper and onions and roasted chili corn, are again topped with sour cream and shredded cheese. Guacamole is extra.

Other main ingredients are steak ($8) or chicken, sofritas and veggies ($6.95).

You can order these in a salad, bowl, taco or burrito. We prefer the bowls.
