City Council makes Feb.9 Joseph Gallucci Day in Warwick

“Everybody has their own touching stories about Council President (Joseph) Gallucci,” Councilman Ed Ladouceur said during the Nov.15 City Council meeting.

During Monday’s meeting the Council voted unanimously to make Feb. 9 Joseph Gallucci day in Warwick. Gallucci passed away on Feb.6 last year at the age of 85. Feb.9 was his birthday.

A 1953 graduate of Lockwood High School Gallucci represented Ward 8 on the Council from 1977 to 1984, 1990 to 1994, and 2015 to 2018. He served as Council President from 1983 to 1984 and from 1993 to 1994.

Additionally, he was the clerk of the Board of Canvassers and Director of the Department of Human Services for many years. Gallucci was a 22-year veteran of the Rhode Island Army National Guard, completing his service as Lieutenant Colonel.

“Joe was just a standup individual,” Ladouceur, who introduced the resolution, said during the meeting.

“He was always trying to help his colleagues on the Council,” Ladouceur went on to state. “It's very difficult to express the impact that Councilam Gallucci had on me over the years.”

Councilman Jeremy Rix said that he remembered his favorite poem of “Yesterday is a cancelled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is cash.”

Rix also told the Council he remembered how Gallucci told him and others about how the City used to give out free zeppoles at City Hall on Saint Joseph’s Day.

As a proud Italian American, Rix said Gallucci thought it was important that Saint Joseph’s Day was on the recycling calendars, and Rix one year made sure of it.

Rix then asked that if it wasn’t too late for this year that they made sure that Joe Gallucci Day was marked on the calendars.

Mayor Frank Picozzi on Tuesday said that the deadline for this year’s calendar has already passed.

Ladouceur said that he was happy to be able to help dedicate a day in Warwick in honor of his friend.

“To honor this amazing individual who has touched not just all of our lives but pretty much everyone he came in contact with as well as being a devoted servant to our country.”

city council, Joe Gallucci
