Clampitt returns

By ALEX SPONSELLER Local boxing legend Jaime “Hurricane” Clampitt is making her return to the ring this Saturday when she takes on Kim Wabik at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.

Clampitt – who was inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame last summer as part of the 2020 class – will be making her second appearance since coming out of retirement in 2021. After an eight-year retirement, she returned to boxing last June when she headlined the Classic Entertainment Sports card at Cranston Stadium, where she fought to a draw.

Now, at 45 years old, she is ready for another challenge.

“I feel good physically. I’ve done a lot of sparring this training camp, I’ve been challenged by all the sparring that I’ve had so that obviously helps with the mental side. Things have gone really well,” said Clampitt. “Obviously at my age it’s uncommon to be competing. Coming back after an eight-year layoff, that fight was just to see where I was at. It was a tough fight, but it made it sweeter getting the draw after eight years off and against a tough opponent. Now, I have that experience under my belt and we are taking one fight at a time.”

Although she is as busy as ever owning a gym and raising a family, Clampitt remains zeroed in on the task at hand.

“I have (On the Ropes), I have two children, my husband works a lot, so the balancing act is challenging. I’m super grateful because I have so many people that support me. I feel more focused than ever because I don’t waste time doing anything,” said Clampitt.

Clampitt will enter the ring on Saturday night with little knowledge of her opponent. Her goal is to be fit and ready to handle any adversity that she will be faced with.

“I don’t know a lot about Kimberly, I know she was in the amateur scene for quite awhile, I’ve heard some reports from different people. Going into the fight, we just try to prepare for anything that could happen, try to come up with a fight plan. My goal is to get in the best shape that I can to deal with these situations,” Clampitt said.

As she gets ready to climb through the ropes once again, she also hopes to serve as an inspiration to those who compete and are looking to stay active at a later age.

“I must say, having On the Ropes and having my business partners Tracy (Lombard), Amy (Cham) and Kathy (Lyons), they’re just so supportive. They definitely pick up the slack for me when I’m not there. That’s one of the reasons why I came out of retirement. Working with those amateur boxers. They motivate me, inspire me, and I hope that I can inspire others to achieve their dreams and their goals,” said Clampitt.
