Coast Guard Auxiliary offering virtual safe boating classes

A recent Coast Guard Bulletin stated that fatal boating accidents in the Northeast have increased by 400 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. There is a national campaign to educate the boating public about the dangers of drinking and boating, the importance of having the right safety equipment aboard, etc.

Because of Covid restrictions, the Coast Guard Auxiliary has not been able to do vessel safety checks or hold safe boating courses, but now, with an easing of some restrictions, vessel safety checks are available and courses are beginning with restrictions to meet COVID-19 safety practices.

US Coast Guard Aux. North Star Flotilla will be holding three separate Safe Boating Courses in May. The classes will be held via Zoom with an in person registration and distribution of books and materials by appointment before the course begins and an in-person final exam at the conclusion. These will be done by appointment and will abide by the social distancing state rules, with masks. Classes are limited to 20 students.

There are three different classes. One will run Mondays May 3, 10, and 17th. Another will run Tuesdays May 4, 11, and 18th. A third runs Wednesdays May 5, 12, and 19th.

All 3 classes will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. via Zoom. The proctored boating safety test will be arranged by appointment, to meet USCG Aux. & RI Covid-19 policy.

Choose which night’s class you prefer and call Nick at 401-578-9301 or 401-739-6028 to arrange for registration appointment which will be on April 26, April 27, April 28 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Coast Guard Auxiliary building at Safe Harbor Marina (the old Brewer’s) near Chelo’s on the Water, 1 Masthead Dr. off Post Road in Warwick.

The cost for the class including text and materials is $45 with $25 for second or third members of the family. Credit cards are not accepted.

Successful completion of the course will result in a RI State Boating card, required of any power boat operator born after January 1, 1986 and any operator of a jet ski.

For any questions, or to arrange a registration appointment, call Nick or Roz 401-578-9381 or 401-739-6028.
