What Makes a Community Champion?

Meet this week’s Community Champion, Becky Bernard.

A proud graduate of Pilgrim High School, Becky is a natural born leader both on and off the field. Just recently, this inspiring athlete competed at the Special Olympics 2025 Summer Games at the University of Rhode Island, bringing home a gold medal in the 25 meter walk as well as a bronze in the softball throw.

Not only is Becky a competitive athlete, she is a dedicated member of the Athlete Leadership Council representing her team at ReFocus, a non-profit organization serving adults with differing physical and developmental needs.

After completing leadership training, Becky collaborates with others to ensure an inclusive environment for all athletes. She is a voice for others and provides feedback to coaches as they prepare for the next season. This Olympian’s recent victories at URI are just a few examples of her dedication, athletic talent, and inner strength.

However, Becky’s impact extends far beyond the playing field. Becky lives by the belief that “you can do anything that you put your mind to.” This is a message that she carries with her, not just in her own life, but as encouragement to those around her.

Despite some obstacles that she successfully navigates around, Becky remains focused on showing up with positivity and excellence. Her willingness to help others, lead by example, and stay present in the moment makes her a true force for goodness in the community. Becky is more than an athlete - she is a role model whose kindness, resilience, and commitment to lifting others up continues to make Warwick, and the world, a better place.

Here is a Q&A with Becky regarding her life as an athlete and community champion.

BT: Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self?

BB: Well, looking back the advice I would give my younger self would be that you can do anything that you put your mind to and keep consistent with.

BT: Beyond your achievement in sports, what or who inspires you to give back to your community as well as encouraging others to do the same?

BB: My house definitely, everyone included, it’s a close knit family. Part of the Refocus mission statement is; “we value and encourage the enhancement of the whole person, each with unique talents and strengths. We also value the right of using these gifts in making informed life choices.” That has really grown on me and it stuck. The culture is contagious. It may have taken me some time to get it but I can definitely see the changes. I’m a work in progress. No one is perfect, but I try my best.

BT: You, as an athletic leader and athlete, continue to be a positive influence on your teammates and encourage them to make a difference in their community. What are some examples of the positive contributions that you have made to make the world a better place?

BB: I currently have a lot of things going on with my health so I try to take things day by day. Putting my best foot forward and keeping my spirit high while operating in a spirit of excellence helps me stay focused on being present in the moment. In-turn, that puts me in the best position to help someone else wherever the need is and as long as I’m capable. I’m always willing to help.
