Conversion to new streetlights to occur in waves, Picozzi urges patience

Mayor Frank Picozzi urged residents Wednesday to be patient as the City works to coordinate the conversion of nearly 9,000 streetlights to LED technology.

“We appreciate the patience from Warwick residents as we take on this important project for our City. Please know my staff is working as hard as they can to speed up the process and get these requests resolved, but due to the pandemic it’s taking longer than expected. Again, we’re asking you to be patient as we get these delayed requests taken care of as soon as possible,” the mayor said in a statement.

The light inventory was purchased from National Grid in October of 2020.  Since that time the city has been working with their vendor, The Partnership for Rhode Island Streetlight Management (PRISM), to set up the constituent call center, evaluate a lighting pilot, and select equipment for the conversion.  The city has received over 120 service requests to date for the repair of fixtures,  many of which have been out for months and even years.  Lights located at critical intersections, crosswalks, and major vehicular travel ways will be addressed immediately due to traffic and pedestrian safety concerns.   However, with the conversion of the lights only a couple months away, lights located in low traffic volume areas, such as residential streets, will take a bit longer.  LED fixtures and controls are on order, but delivery will likely take 6 to 8 weeks due to supply chain issues related to COVID.  Those who have reported an outage will be prioritized once the conversion starts.  Remaining lights will be converted in waves from late March through July 2021.   Once the lights are converted service requests received will be addressed within five days in accordance with the city’s vendor contract.
