Deming, Richard (Dick) Greene

Richard Greene Deming (Dick) passed away peacefully at St. Elizabeth Green House 15 on October 2, 2024. He was 96. He was the husband of the late Eunice (Austin) Deming, they had been married for 70 years.

Richard was born on January 22, 1928, in Yonkers, NY. He was the son of the late Lester B. Deming and Helen (Greene) Deming.

He was a graduate of Yonkers High School. Following high school, he served in the Coast Guard for three years. After his service he attended NYU and graduated in 1953 with a BS in physical education, health and recreation. He went to work for the Yonkers YMCA and was relocated to the Warwick YMCA in 1956. Soon after, Dick began his teaching career in Coventry RI, first teaching science and then starting the elementary physical education program for the town. He also earned his master’s degree from Rhode Island College. After retiring from Coventry School system, he taught PE at Providence Hebrew Day School until fully retiring.

Dick was a member of Trinity Church Pawtuxet. He was a member of the choir and volunteered his time for fundraising, social events and outreach to shut-ins. For many years along with his dog Cappy, he volunteered at St Elizabeth’s, in Providence and East Greenwich.

Dick was a proud member of the Pawtuxet Rangers RIHM and Past Commander of the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife and Drum Corps earning the rank of Lt. Col. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge No 4 and the Scottish Rite.

Anyone that knew Dick also knew that he loved his New York Yankees and was a fan his entire life. He also enjoyed comparing Wordle scores with his siblings and never missed Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

He is survived by two Daughters, Carol A. Deming and Linda B. Deming of Pawtuxet Village; his brother, Lawrence M. Deming (Shirley) of Ocean City, NJ; his sister Suzanne Hooker of Webster Groves, MO; a cousin, Dorothy Hills of Apalachicola Fl; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his good friend and fellow Yankees fan Tony at Green House 15. He was predeceased by his brother Lester B. Deming Jr. Dick’s family would like to thank the many Shahbaz and nurses that took such good care of Dick at St. Elizabeth Community. They brought such joy and comfort to the last chapter of his life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richards Funeral Service on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 139 Ocean Avenue Cranston, RI, 02905. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. Interment will follow in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.
