Dr. Al Vario named president, CEO at Trudeau Center

Dr. Al Vario was appointed president and Chief Executive Officer of the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center on January 1, 2023.

Vario takes the helm of the provider of services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities  after seven years of working as Trudeau’s Chief Operating Officer. He succeeds  Judith A. Sullivan, who has retired.

 Over 30 years ago, Vario sparked his human services career by becoming a Direct Support Professional and has never looked back. “My focus was, and always has been, to provide children and adults with disabilities the best possible opportunities to thrive and succeed,” Vario said in a statement.

  Vario’s focus mirrors Trudeau’s mission to enhance the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 Vario has earned an Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership and Communication from Northeastern University, as well as an M. A .in Psychology and a B.S. in Health Education and Community Health from Rhode Island College. His doctoral research focused on nonprofit sustainability and innovation. Vario’s career highlights include numerous senior leadership positions across a variety of nonprofit agency and hospital settings, consulting roles and he is a professor for Drexel University’s M.S. in Nonprofit Management program.

 “Trudeau’s Board is excited to have Dr. Al Vario as the new president and CEO,” said Chairman of the Board Jeff Bogosian. “His strong leadership abilities and community ties will ensure that the Trudeau Center continues to thrive.”

 Vario leads more than 400 employees who support hundreds of Rhode Islanders with disabilities, his rich academic background and immense nonprofit knowledge will be a great benefit to the Trudeau Center.
