Essential oils for your skin

You can look younger and save money by incorporating essential oils into your skin care routine.

While there are many commercial products available to reduce wrinkles, some people prefer natural alternatives such as using essential oils. Making your own skin care is nice because you can tailor make it for your skin and save lots of money. As we age the skin begins to break down and loses its elasticity. This natural process causes wrinkles, and fine lines to appear around the forehead, mouth and eyes. Although essential oils will not eliminate wrinkles completely, they will help reduce their appearance.

Lemon essential oil is well known for its Vitamin C content and potential health benefits for the immune system. It is used in a variety of over-the-counter skin care products to help reduce the signs of aging. Studies have found that lemon oil could reduce the damage caused by oxidation. Lemon oil may help prevent sun damage, which can lead to wrinkles.

All citrus essential oils, including lemon and grapefruit make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid sun exposure for several hours after using a citrus oils. I apply them in the evening.

Lesser-known essential oils that are also great for your skin are sandalwood, clary sage and ylang-ylang. Sandalwood has anti-inflammatory properties and can help restore moisture to the skin. When the skin is properly hydrated it appears plumper and lines and wrinkles are diminished. Clary sage also has anti-inflammatory properties. It has the unique quality of helping you DNA from being damaged by free radicals, which we know damages the skin. Ylang-ylang is an essential oil often used in perfumes. In a 2015 study, ylang-ylang had shown some antioxidant effects that could aid in skin renewal.

Rose oil is also used in many perfumes. It is great for the skin. It is a natural antioxidant and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Before you apply an essential oil to the skin you must dilute it with a carrier such as grapeseed, almond or avocado oil.

In my workshop we will learn about carriers, the correct ratios and how to blend essential oils. Stay tuned for more details and reach out to me if you are interested (SixtiesAndSexy@gmail.com)!
