Faith leaders gather to pray at City Hall

About 50 worshippers gathered on the steps of Warwick City Hall on Thursday, May 6 to celebrate the National Day of Prayer, a nationwide event that calls together people of many faiths in collective devotions.

During the event, local ministers, Rabbis, pastors, and spiritual leaders lead prayers for a better world. The event featured blessings from Pastor Rick Moore, who prayed for religious freedom, Messaianic Rabbi Bryan Samuel, who prayed for media, arts, and entertainment, Pastor Jim Lawson, who said prayers for business, Josh Morris, who prayed for the military, Charlene King, who prayed for education, Pastor Matt MacIntosh, who prayed for government leaders, and Juhyoun Stewart, who prayed for medical personnel and healthcare workers. Associate Pastor Frank Xavier said prayers for Mayor Frank Picozzi.

“It is an important day because it gives us pause to think of God, to acknowledge someone or an entity greater than ourselves, to remember life is a gift from that creator, and to live it responsibly,” said Joanne Miller, coordinator of the event, in an email. Miller has coordinated the National Day of Prayer in Warwick for the past eight years.

“If people respond to that inspiration from the prayers made for them, they get on the road to forgiveness, better ways of communicating, etc. However, humanity doesn’t always respond. God usually, but not always, works in relationship with humankind,” she wrote in an email. “This is why we come back every year. We are asking God again to prompt and initiate change. We see some people’s lives/idea/actions change and many more who need divine help and prompting and guidance to do so.”
