West rolls to 32-13 win over Broncos

The Cranston West Falcons went to Burrillville High School on Saturday afternoon and battered the Broncos 32-13, while earning their first victory of the season.

Last week, the Falcons blew a 17-point lead to the Wizards, but this week, West fought for most of the 48 minutes.

“We definitely came back this week and we were able to put almost four full quarters together,” Falcons head coach Tom Milewski said. “We stuck out some adversity and there were some injuries in the game that we were able to overcome.”

West received the ball first, and on second down, running back Marcus Chung rushed 31 yards down the left sideline to the Burrillville 33.

Four plays later, running back Dimitri LeBlanc ran in a touchdown from four yards out and put West on top 6-0. However, the Falcons failed the extra point, due to a bad snap.

Next, LeBlanc, who also plays at defensive back, intercepted Burrillville quarterback Logan Gelinas during the Broncos opening possession, and returned the ball to the Broncos 34.

West would bring the ball as far as the Burrillville half-yard line before LeBlanc fumbled it and it was recovered by Jacob Woodlock, the Broncos linebacker.

From there, Burrillville drove 99 yards down the field for a TD and tied the game at 6. That drive was capped by a 61-yard pass from Gelinas to wide receiver Elijah Diallo. Then, kicker Daniel DelMonaco added the extra point and put the Broncos up 7-6.

“Burrillville hung in there,” Milewski said. “They kept it close, so hats off to them. But I’m proud of our guys. We made another step forward. We stepped back a little bit against West Warwick and we stepped forward going into Burrillville this week.”

With 7:23 remaining in the second quarter, West quarterback Kelan Cornell passed to Braydan Stetson, and the running back slashed and dashed in-and-out of traffic on his way to a 35-yard score and gave the Falcons a 12-7 advantage.

The Broncos turned the ball over on downs after that and gave West the ball back at its own 46.

Three plays into that possession, Cornell connected on a bomb to Chung for a score and it extended the Falcons edge to 18-7, and that’s where the two teams sat at halftime.

West increased its cushion to 24-7, seven minutes into the third quarter, when on a fourth-and-7 from the Broncos 17, Cornell passed to Hudson Carvalho in the corner of the end zone for a TD. That was Cornell’s third TD pass of the game.

“He took a step forward again today,” Milewski said. “He’s a sophomore, so it was his first actual league start today. So, he managed the game. He had his ups and downs. He’s got some work to do ahead of him, but he’s definitely progressing like we want him to.”

Next, the Falcons converted on their first two-point conversion of the contest when Cornell rushed in a keeper and upped the Falcons buffer to 26-7.

Burrillville inherited great field position later in the third when Cornell fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Jack Dichiaro, who brought it to the West 8.

Four plays later, Gelinas rushed up the gut, four yards, and into pay dirt, and inched the Broncos within 26-13.

Stetson started the fourth frame with a 31-yard scamper to the Burrillville 12.

Then, Chung took care of the rest, rushing 12 yards into pay dirt, while increasing the Falcons advantage to 32-13.

With the win, West improves its season record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Falcons play next on Friday night at Pariseau Field against the St. Raphael Academy Saints (1-1, 0-1).

“We’ll celebrate this win today and we’ll get back at it for St. Ray’s on Monday,” Milewski said.

St. Rays fell to East Providence 29-22 in its league-opener last Thursday night. The Saints trailed the Townies 27-9 before making it a game in the final quarter.

“They’re solid,” Milewski said of the Saints. “They went to the Super Bowl the last couple of years, so we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

“They’ve got a good quarterback, they’ve got a couple good receivers … they’ve got one of the better backs in Moses Meus, so we’ve got our work cut out for us, but you know what, if we play like we played today, we’ll be okay.”
